  • Me trunk, no open, no joy

    Hey guys,

So the other day I went to open up my trunk to drop off some bottles at the bottle depot. Go to open it from the fob, nadda. Try from the switch next to the drivers seat, nadda. With the key hole on the trunk, still nothing. I can hear the mechanism trying to open, but it never pops.

    Any ideas?

I had the same thing happen to me after I got rear ended. I actually ended up putting the seats down and crawling into the car and opening it from inside. Same with me, I can hear the mechanism trying to open too and the other day I took the carpet lining off and I saw that the actuator does work, however, the lever that the actuator pushes is broken hence not triggering to open.

Best to take the lining in trunk off and see which part is failing.

I figured as much, I'm still trying to fix my car after I was rear ended as well.

Re: Me trunk, no open, no joy

Its a broken piece of plastic in the mechanism that is causing the issue. Had it happen on both of our MKIV's. Not a bad fix.

Here is a how to fix video:

        Hope that helps!

Re: Me trunk, no open, no joy

That's great, thanks guys I'll have to take a peek and see if this will work. Hopefully I won't have to crawl into the trunk.

Edit: Nope, applying pressure on the lid didn't help. Guess I'll be crawling inside the trunk after all.

It is likely the wiring that goes from the body to the trunk. I opens and closes with the hinge so it wears out and breaks over time. I have cut apart that harness, soldered it back together and sealed it all back up with glue filled heat shrink before.

Noobie question, does anyone know if this trunk mechanism comes with a new trunk lid, or would I need to pick up the fix as well as a new trunk lid?

Re: Me trunk, no open, no joy

As nismo drifter already said its most likely a broken piece of plastic in the locking mechanism. What I did was crawl into the trunk, undo the 12 screws holding the carpet on and removed that and manually forced the lock open. There is a little piece of plastic wedged in between the U shaped hook and the latch and I just needed to dig it out with a flathead. I miiiiight have pictures on my photobucket or on my phone I will try to find for you

Re: Me trunk, no open, no joy

What I was getting at is that I need to get a new trunk lid anyway, and was curious if anyone knew if a new lid will come with that mechanism.

A new lid will likely not come with it unless you got a used one.

Stonewall, you are incorrect in this situation, the mk4 trunk lid has a manual rod from the trunk key hole to the latch, if it's not popping from the key in the trunk lid it's the plastic bit. And since he cam hear the solenoid moving it's not a power problem. You can get just that little plastic peice that clips to the rod from the dealer I'm pretty sure....

This is a pic of the latch mechanism. The center bit that swings shut is coated in plastic and that's what broke off in my latch and it prevents the bit from opening at all.
