  • MK4 Jetta VR6 noise from engine

    Hey guys,

Some people know that i'm new to the VW scene so i have got some questions.

    Question 1:

When i rev the engine above 1500 rpm, this noise is very very distinct. What i mean is that when i rev it, it sounds like a chain is hitting something. I've done some research and found out that the guide rail for the upper timing chain is notorious for snapping and will look something like this.

It sounds kinda like This, click here for noise, but not as bad as this guys. I'm gonna call VW and get the parts and do this change over the weekend.

    Question 2:

My car has 208xxx km on it and i dont know if the timing chain has ever been changed. How often should someone change the timing chain? And should i just change the timing chain anyways while i have the whole thing open?

    Question 3:

How do you get better throttle response from this car???????? Every VW i've ever driven has had the same type of throttle response. I dunno if everyone is used to it or if some people have done something about a better response from the gas pedal.

Thanks a lot to everyone for tanking the time to help me out. Much appreciation.

I bet if you look in the oil filter housing you will find metal particles. When the guides go the chain slaps against the housing but only at certain rpm's when the chain slacks off. I know this from experience as I spent all winter rebuilding the 12V in my van and trust me the van will be a lot harder then your jetta. Don't get the parts from VW, you will pay 2 to 3 times more then other places. Paul at Bert and Jacks can get you all the parts. There are a couple good tutorials on the VWvortex. Just so you know you are in for a biggish job. The trans needs to come out and you might as well do the head gasket at that many kilometers. You also might as well do the water pump, serp belt and add a metal crack pipe while you are at it. If you do it yourself you are likely only looking at 500-700$ in parts otherwise prepare for a big bill in labor.

Wanna start out by saying...Paul at Bert and Jacks IS THE KING!! I called Northland VW today and they quoted me $630 for all the parts that i need for the job. Even before i contacted Paul, he PM'd me about all the parts and the cost and he seriously has the lowest price for parts. The guy.....AWESOME!!!

Stonewall, you said that " the trans needs to come out". Ive done a few timing blet jobs, mainly hondas, and i've never needed to take the transmission out. I've looked at a few of the DIY's on vwvortex and none of them say that the transmission needs to come out. Is thier something that I might be missing?

transmission needs to come out to do the lower timing chain.
If the issue is just the upper guide then you can get away with just doing that one, but might as well do it all.
