    wow. i cannot believe this.

1 word of advise is post your problems here, people will tell you their opinions. then its best to take it to a real mechanic that knows VWs and after you get it fixed, post back and tell us what the problem is.

      Re: TDI Help

i think at this point the best solution for me is to just replace the turbo because it has 270xxx km's on the car and it's going to need to be replaced eventually. and then i'm gonna get george to look at all the other stuff too while he's in there and hopefully clean out the intake and get everything else in better shape for me.... i really don't have the skill and or the time to do a job this big on my own so i don't think i have any other option.

and the funny thing is about posting my problems here is that i did that, and when i told george what everyone here said, he actually interrupted me while i was saying it and he said he doesn't care what the people on the forum say, and that he doesn't like to be told how to do his job....maybe he was having a bad day and i pissed him off by saying what the problem might be and that's why he suggested something that ended up messing me over even worst.

Well, it would be a good idea to do all the work, if you have the cash though, I would go bigger turbo...VNT 17 as someone else mentioned. The power difference is night and day. Keep us posted.

Wow George must have been having a bad day as it is people like us on these forums who have given him our business and sent other people his way why he has the reputation and business that he has now. I don't think it is a good idea to go pissing on those people now. If you want a second opinion go see Paul at Bert and Jacks and see what diagnostic he comes up with.

            Re: TDI Help

Both Paul and George are good guys. There are a pretty large group of us with very different degrees of knowledge, and I'm sure people walk in to these and any other shop, demanding ridiculous things be done to their car based on something learned on the internet. Likely, for every useful comment/piece of advise, there are 100 left filed comments that have nothing to do with the issue at hand. I can see how it could become a pain in the ass for the mechanic.

I agree, I'd trust George with my car any day. Enthusiast through and thru. And I agree with stonewall, it's people like us on these forums who are also enthusiasts who take our cars and recommend a specialty shop like tunedub to other people. I'd say bad day maybe stress from moving shops maybe? I also agree that if youve gotta ante up for a new turbo spend little extra and buy a vnt17. My .02

                Re: TDI Help

Being in the mechanic's field at one time I understand George's position on listening to the forum opinion. He is the one being paid to look at the car and is ultimately the one you put your trust in to fix it.

Do us all a favour and check to see if the VNT atleast moves. It would suck to go spending all this $$$$ on a turbo only to find out its the N75 valve that's a $100 and you could easily fix yourself.

In terms of turbo options, you can get from the US, but if George is going to do the work best to get the parts through him. In the mechanic's field it works pretty much like this...

Bring your own parts, mechanic charges more time and you have warranty on the work, but anything to do with the part you are up a creek.
George supplies the parts, normally they balance the profit between the sale of the part and the work being done. You get the peace of mind of a complete job and the part and labour are warrantied.

If you are up a creek and want to try another ecu send me a pm. I have a spare chipped ecu from my 2000 Jetta.

                  Re: TDI Help

thanks all for all of the suggestions here. When George took a look at it he said that the VNT was barely moving and was getting stuck and that was the problem. As for George and the forums suggesting what he should do, I fully understand where he's coming from. I'd be a little insulted too if I was a professional and someone came to me and told me how to do my job, but at the same time that's the point of doing research. I think it's better for me to go to him with some kind of idea what the problem is then go to him and say "my car is broken...fix it".

As for an update on the situation, I had taken the car in to northland today for them to take a look to see what the situation was. They called me back saying that they couldn't even get into my ECM because of the chip and they suggested that I go to George and get him to restore factory settings. That would mean loosing out on the stage 1 chip that I purchased the car with. Anyways, I went to George and he was a little upset that I would even take the car to Northland but he reset the car back to stock settings. When I drove home, not only did the car not have the problem at 3500 RPM (the one where it felt like my throttle cable had ripped and I had no acceleration at all) but now I wasn't able to get the car to over boost either (so no more limp mode)

Before all of this mess started and I only had the issue of overboosting, the fastest I had ever gone was 145, and that was going down a hill with a tailwind, then the car went into limp mode. Today, after getting the car back to stock settings, I was able to get the car up to 165 and I could have still gone faster (mind you the car was much slower to get up to speed)

I've never been so confused about what the problem really is and what I should do from here before.

                  Anyone have any suggestions now??

                    Re: TDI Help

I have an extra vnt actuator is you want to do that route and just replace that. As for the chip issues, someone screwed up along the way and I am not sure how flashing it twice with aftermarket both had problems but stock doesn't.

                      Re: TDI Help

VNT is still quite possible. If it is sticking, it is probably somewhat intermittent. Good chance at some point you will experience you limp mode again, in my opinion at least. It's something you can at least basically check with no tools. You just have to find it and move it with your fingers and see if it moves freely.

                        Re: TDI Help

Well, if Northland told you that they couldn't access the ecu...thats a crock of SHYTE...I have stage 1+ and still had all of my warranty work done there. Anyways...without the flash, you are just covering up the initial problem...and it will come back.
I think you should just sell me your car...I've been looking for a 2dr for a while! LOL

BTW...here's some valid points on Northland and dealer service in general.

                          Re: TDI Help

The reason the problem went away is the chip ran the turbo probably closer to 18-19 psi, while stock is 15 psi. More psi means more travel for the vnt actuator. Running the car stock for so long probably had corrosion or rust build up on it. The chips required more travel so the higher the tune the more travel was needed.
I can't see the car so this is a forum fix, just figure I would give you something you could look at and maybe fix for 30 mins of your time.

yeah so as i had mentioned earlier, i drive up to edmonton yesterday to catch a flight. the car went into limp mode after half the drive up. so you guys were right about it coming back. now the car is going to be parked for a few days while im gone. when i get back i'm gonna spend a day to actually look at the turbo and check all the things that could be the problem.
