  • How to change a shift knob in MK4??

Hi guys, I'm finally getting around to trying to install a factory shift knob as the original one is in horrible condition. I lifted the boot and there is a clamp holding it on so it obviously doesn't just turn off. Do I need to cut it off and get a new one to clamp on? Or is there a trick?

A bunch of you guys must have done this before?

if you are careful you can un-bend the clamp enough to get it off an be able to re-use it, but yes, that has come off or be loosened. If you cut it you'll need something to replace it. There is probably enough room for a hose clamp or something similar.

I've got a small hose clamp on mine, you can't even tell it's there.

Hey guys thanks. I think I'll do a hose clamp for now if I can't just loosen it a little.

Just cut it off and just a crimp type hose clamp. They are the type that have two spots on them to crimp together. Cheap and easy to use. I just use a end cut clipper to crimp them together. So what are you replacing it with?

Well I probably have a hose clamp just kicking around. If not then I'll get the crimp on kind.

I'm not replacing it with anything special, just a mint factory one I got from Derek as mine is falling apart. No mods for the golf it's just my daily beater. I modded the Expedition instead.

well, if you haven't cut the crimp ring off yet,

put a flat screwdriver in there and spread out the crimp ring, after you're done, squeeze the ring back with pliers.

If you do cut/break the ring, I'm sure VW can get them for you, or maybe a small pex crimp ring would work also ????
