Has anyone had any success attaching a portable HDD to a Pioneer deck via USB port?

I have done some research online and it would appear you need to have it as a FAT32 file system, which is OLD. So old, that Windows 7 won't even format a HDD to it anymore. I managed to find a utility that would convert my 500gb HDD to FAT32, but still can't connect.... Anyone tackled this problem before?

Haha, truly epic avatar Popp.... I am not even trying to play video off of it, just music. The deck won't seem to even recognize the hard drive, and it is FOR SURE FAT32....

My Pioneer deck has an 8 gig usb stick and I don't think it's Fat32 (win 7 here)

right, but that's a usb stick, I am referring to a portable laptop hard drive, spinning parts = requires more power, etc

Power could be the problem, and there is a way around that

                  Re: Pioneer Decks

I have tried looking on Avic411 a few times, but their search engine is a joke. Do you have a link to that thread? I might have to bite the bullet and get a name brand portable drive then.

Brent, do you have a way for me to supply power to the drive from another source?

                    Re: Pioneer Decks

i "had" 2 pioneer decks, both have hd's .. i forget the size, but i think around 250gb? i'll tell you this, they are slow to index :( ..

as for power, the pioneer usb didn't have enough for me. so some ppl use a USB 12V cigerette lighter adapter. another option is to modify a female usb cable and splice in an lm7805 +5 voltage regulator. you can get one at active components, or ask me to give u one at the next meeting. it's very simple to wire up if you can solder. i will draw a quick diagram for you if you go that route.

so rather than using a hard drive, i would recommend purchasing an iPod. i replaced my hard drives with ipods because of the speed issue. and the ipod cable carries video. when i say ipod, i mean ones with hard drives, not that wanna-be iphone ipod touch carp

I am hunting Kijiji for a reasonably priced large capacity classic ipod. The only draw back is Apple's shitty attitude means that large capacity is only 160gb. I have 230+gb of music alone.... Oh well.
