I run Amsoil 5-30 for winter, 15-40 for summer.
When I run out of Amsoil, I'll probably switch to Royal Purple.

I run Castrol full-synthetic 5W-50 (~$6.50/litre @ Costco) year round in my VR6. I noticed pretty much zero oil consumption in my previous VR6 with it.

I've heard great things about Amsoil too. Thing is, change your oil every 5000 km, and you're laughing with any synthetic, IMHO. The best oil won't help ya if your air filter is pooched/dirty/old!

Just sticking to what's treated me well! That said, even with 24v I don't pick any "fights" when I see the 1.8T!!! LOL

VW has some great engines - my advice to potential buyers is to pick any one of the optional engines.

Mobile 1 Tri-Synthetic is good, VERY good. I've read 3rd party tech analysis of it, its nice. Also, I've read the tech analysis of Mobil's new SuperSyn, and its much better "comparatively" to Tri-Synthetic. I'm definately going with it next change. Also, for guys with bigger turbos (k04 hybrid) you may want to consider running a 10W30 weight because the kkk turbos are wicked oil dependant and the last thing you want it oil basically being too think thus the turbo's shaft whips the oil off before it touches...

For my next turbo (gt25) I'm going to be using 10W30 and whoever buys my k04 should probably do the same.
