Dear Eurodrivers,
I have a no-start problem. Car is:
2006 A4 Jetta Wagon TDI ( pumpe duse, 1.9L 100hp ). 5 speed manual. Canada delivery. Original owner.
100% stock, no reprogramming or biodiesel.
2 months out of warranty. Very Mad.
Located in Calgary S.E.
The symptoms:
Engine quit while running, would not restart ( was at normal operating temp ).
Glow plug light does NOT come on as usual when the key is turned.
Starter cranks the engine just fine.
All other systems seem to behave as normal when key is turned.
My attempts at repair:
1) All fuses show OK, in-dash and at the battery top. Triple checked.
2) Seeking to reset the ECM, I disconnected the negative battery cable for 5 minutes, with a wire shorting the cable to the positive side to assure there was no latent charge between the two cables.
3) Looking into the TDIClub forum I found data on the "Relay 109" problem. I bought a new one ( FYI: Both old and new relays are the newer gray color ). The new one had 78 ohms impedance across the field coil, whereas the old one had 149. I thought for sure I had it, however it did not fix the problem.
4) Thinking I perhaps bought a bad relay, I tested relay 109 further by removing the cover and viewing it. It readily engaged when fed 12v from a bench supply. The contacts looked clean and ohmed out at < 1 ohm when engaged. Putting it back in the car with cover off, I can see the relay activate when the key is turned to RUN. Further, I drove a straight pin through the cable coming out of the relay and verified that is does provide 12v to the engine systems when it engages.
Therefore I'm convinced that relay 109 is working properly.
5) I've recently disconnected the battery for 44 hours, with the batt cables tied together. No help.
Going further, I had a look at relay 103. it is in position 4-lower on the relay panel, which ( according to the diagram I have ) should be a "409" type relay for the fuel pump. I assume it's a 103 type due to being a diesel. (?)
This relay tests OK on the bench ( engages with 12v and good conductivity, contacts clean ). So I put it in place without it's cover and observed. It does NOT engage with the key off, in RUN, or START.
Can anyone tell me the purpose of "Relay 103" on this model TDI? When should it engage? One manual states that type 103 relays are for the glow plugs, yet my chart indicates that the GP relay is a type 53 in location 10 ( which I have in my car ).
Any advice is welcome, and I also have a couple questions if you would be so kind:
1) Can anyone point me towards a wring diagram for this area of the car? I've been searching the web for some time without luck.
2) I may have to buy a diagnostic analyzer. Any recommendations? Is Ross-Tech the only game in town?
Also looking for a loaner VCDS in Calgary area. Friendly beer-type compensation is offered.
Thank you all in advance. Best Regards,
Jeff C.
