  • 2012 Passat Revealed (NMS)

On the eve of the Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen has officially announced the New Midsize Sedan (NMS) will be called the Passat in North America.

Despite sharing the same name with the European model, the two cars have virtually nothing in common. For starters, the American Passat features Jetta-derived styling which is bland but "timeless." More importantly, the car measures 191.7 inches long and rides on a massive 110.4 inch wheelbase.

Inside, the spacious cabin features a Touareg-inspired instrument cluster, premium chrome accents and best-in-class legroom. Three trim levels will be available, but all models come nicely-equipped with automatic climate control, power windows, cruise control, an outside temperature display (with frost warning), and Bluetooth connectivity. Options include power seats, leather upholstery, GPS navigation, wood trim, ambient lighting, and keyless access with push button starting.

Under the hood, three engines will be available. The entry-level 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine produces 170 hp (127 kW / 172 PS) and 177 lb-ft (240 Nm) of torque. It is mated to a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automatic.

Moving up to the 3.6-liter V6 rewards owners with 280 hp (209 kW / 284 PS) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm) of torque. It is backed up by a standard six-speed DSG transmission, which enables the car to get an estimated 28 mpg highway.

If petrol isn't your thing, a 2.0-liter TDI is also available. It churns out 140 hp (104 kW / 142 PS) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque. This enables the car to return an estimated 43 mpg highway and have a range of approximately 800 miles (1,287 km).

The 2012 Volkswagen Passat will be built in Chattanooga, Tennessee and is scheduled to go on sale later this year with an estimated base price of $20,000.

      ford fusion with VW badge.

VW really is going "cheap" on their new vehicles.

I dont know if this is to bring the peoples car back down to the peoples pricing, and leaving the Audi brand to take care of the higher end customers or what.

I do agree its a little ridiculous when you have close to $40,000 for a GTi.
But when you look at a car like the passat CC, its something like $45k, but on a looks basis its styled similiar to $60K+ cars

Well it is basically an enlarged Jetta, and I can see them using the Jetta and Passat to be the main cars and money makers in NA, while the Golf and GTI are still a more premium/Euro offering. I still see elements of the Phaeton in the design of this car and it is not horrible but as with the Jetta I hope we see some more premium trim levels such as .:R and GLI versions.

On a similar note, VW lent my buddy a brand new Jetta last week as a loaner, it had like 100km on it only. It was a HUGE PIECE OF CRAP.

Everything in the Jetta sucks now, the interior was awful, the powertrain was awful, handling was awful, suspension felt awful, etc.

Just my 2c but the only car that has any style from VW now is a fully loaded GTI. But for $40,000 configured... well there was a time when a GTI was a lot less?

I'm guessing they lent your friend a trendline (base 2.0L) car. Realistically, the suspension set up is identical to all the MK4 cars (other than .:R32) and yet all you previous MK4 owners used to rave about how great your cars handled, but think this one is a piece of ****. I could see people bitching about the car if it remained the same price as before however it is a lot less expensive, so something has to give!

There is no question the car is selling very well and I'm sure a drive in a new GLI or highline with leather will make the driving experience better!

I think it's good that VW is getting back to down to earth "peoples car" pricing.

What pisses me off though is that this B7? Passat shares nothing w/ the Euro version. Makes for major headaches when trying to get parts (Euro or otherwise) a few years down the road. VW has to have one of the most confusing platform lineups ever.

Nice super sized jetta. The whole problem I have with these new cars is you are getting less for less while every other car manufacture is selling cars with more for less.

Fair enough however if there is a perception of "more" at the same price point there must be corner cutting somewhere that you cannot see (body construction, safety, longevity of components and/or materials). I realize hyundai and Kia seem to be offering a lot of car for the money but I still beleive that 5-7 years from now, our cost cutting jetta or passat will look more fresh and hold up better than they do!
