I didn't think my MKIV GTI handled all that great. I thought it felt like a big, fat, top heavy hippo of a car.

I really truly hope VW doesn't Toyota-cize it's cars into complete banality.

I think that metal hood prop really chaps my ass. This isn't the 80-90's anymore. I see tech really hating those stupid things too. Now off to go buy gas struts for my van and cabby.

I can't stand the new cars. Whats it gonna be like when there is a diehard mk6 following on the vortex like the current mk4 forum mess on there. The previous passat was much less ugly. The CC passat was actually pretty good looking.

I'm guessing they lent your friend a trendline (base 2.0L) car. Realistically, the suspension set up is identical to all the MK4 cars (other than .:R32) and yet all you previous MK4 owners used to rave about how great your cars handled, but think this one is a piece of ****. I could see people bitching about the car if it remained the same price as before however it is a lot less expensive, so something has to give!

There is no question the car is selling very well and I'm sure a drive in a new GLI or highline with leather will make the driving experience better!

190% increase in sales for the Jetta for December 2010 over December 2009... So yeah I'd say it's moving great!! Im guessing the new Passat will move well too. Price drop is expected to be about 7grand in US so if they carry that over to Canada like they did with the Jetta it will sell.

What else should it compete with?

Realistically, something needed to happen with the Passat. It hasn't sold well, especially compared to the competition. They had 3 options. Scrap it. Make it fancier and more expensive or scale it down a bit, make it bigger and less expensive and target their direct competition. Which choice would you have made?

haha derek in reality vw should be against toyota and honda but i liked when they were a step above so you paid a bit more and got a better car

then again the last time i visited alex they had a camry on the floor for like 47k which i lol'd at.

oh well

ps.. you work in the industry and more VW specific so you know way more than i do about the goings of VW

you get what you pay for in europe jetta has a proper interior, they made it cheap for americans cause its still better than what a dodge caliber has to offer! lol

was just under my first new jetta today . and the cheapness is not just inside . gone are the hood struts the galvanized exhaust . and many ohther awsome featres of the mk4 . the rear suspension everyone assumes is like the mk4 but they would be wrong it is the same setup as a domestic truck piece of crap , for pete sake it has a dam panard bar to keep the ass end from moving left and right , . if you lower it it will push the intre arm to the one side . gay

Yeah no surprise that cheap cars sell. Especially if you are leveraging and selling out your reputation for quality at the same time.

If Mercedes made a $12,000 car I'm sure it would go like hotcakes even if it was made out of fisher price plastic.

Thing is, soon people lose respect for your brand, and the reputation that you built up for making nice cars goes out the window. Then some company in Malaysia or China or Korea undercuts you and what've you got left? Nothing.
