Ok, so after getting annoyed enough, I decided to get to the bottom of this, and I found the problem. This is for people with a Golf/GTI. Notice that creaking sound coming as if from the rear headliner driving at a slow speed over tiny bumps. Its not really a squeaking sound. Kind of sounds like two soft plastic pieces hitting each other, and thats what it is.
It turns out to be the rear deck lid in the hatch. After a while, the material wears out which makes contact with the frame, and wears down the to the plastic. As you drive, over uneven surfaces, there is minor flex in the frame in the rear. Also, the deck lid doesn't sit tight, so there is room for it to move around, thats how it wore out in the first place.
Take a look at the next three pics:
You can clearly see where its faded. This is after about 35,000km. Meaning when your car is new, it won't have this problem. I wonder if this can be a warranty thing, as this item isn't wear and tear, it's just flawed? Anyhow, this is the problem. It's simple to fix.
Use some velcro:
I opted for the double sided stuff, one side is the hard stuff, the other is the soft. Using the single sided soft velcro is possible, with glue on the other side for a more permanent fix. Thats shown in the last pic.
Cut two pieces, one for each side, to cover up the worn surface:
Then, since the other side will stick to the deck lid, place it over the worn area. Simply install the deck lid back into place, and go for a drive. See if that worked. It did the trick for me. No more rattling from the rear!
For a more permanent solution, you can buy single sided velcro with adhesive on the other side, and simply glue it down as shown here:
Anyway, if you do have this problem, I'd like to hear if it worked for you! (or rather not hear, lol)
