  • Tranny on way out - rebuilders?

Hey guys - l last week I was driving down the road in third at 50 and then suddenly the car sounded like a bag of hammers with no power. I managed to put the clutch in and roll to a stop. They dragged the car onto the tow truck and to a mechanic. He said the transmission was stuck in first gear. He adjusted the shift linkage and replaced the transmission fluid and said that's what he could do.

Now it grinds in first if I'm rolling at all when coming to a stop and grinds into second when it's cold. Also, the shifter has a definite pulsing in first gear, like it's wobbling in and out (pulsing is the shifter moving forward and back)

Now this morning, when I'm driving, if I push the clutch in, or let off the gas there's a sound sort of like a hockey card in the spokes of your bicycle, except way lower in tone. It changes speed with my speed just as the hockey card would.

Any ideas what might be happening?

MKIV Jetta 1.8T 5sp manual, 130k km, original clutch. Stock.

So pissed. I came off CPO warranty in August.

Argue the CPO warranty to the teeth.

Also it could be worse - it could be this:

www.Car-Parts.com if you can't get warranty deal, look here for a used one. It'll be cheaper than a rebuild and you can get warranty depending on the seller.

Any recommendations on how one would go about trying to get warranty on this?

Thats a tough one, calling and asking can't hurt. Bottom line is it ran out in August.

Called and asked, and no warranty.

                Pfft, pussy out already?

Go down and argue that this is something they should have noticed on their regular service interval. Any "reputable" shop should be all over this stuff. They should have been looking as your clutch is basically due for a change.

Plus, I just love to argue.

I`m not interested in the argument when I don`t think I`m in the right.

                      Is $1,700 lucky?

Oh, and how do I check the transmission code? is it EHA or EXE?

Code should be on the bottom of the tranny. I do agree it is something they should have noticed in service if it has been making noise for awhile. I would get it replaced asap though as I use to hate it when people would brake down on the hill into westbank

It wasn't making any noises when it was under warranty - otherwise I would have dealt with it at that time.

Clutch should last longer then that....

Weve had engine jobs at work 2 months off warranty, it can be either great to deal with or not .

Check out www.okanaganvw.ca someone might know of parts or a shop for the work..
