hmmm, when I swapped my turbo out my intake manifold had no build up. None, like i wiped it with my finger and had a nice black fingerprint but no sludge, and that was at 140,000. Kinda odd that cars get that bad, dirty diesel fillers.

I expect to clean my intake, but how does an intake get that plugged, is it crap fuel, weak /dirty filters? I guess I want to know of any preventative maintenance that I can do to lessen the build up.

Preventative maintenance is preventing the exhaust gas, pcv and cold air from intake mixing.... Decreasing EGR duty cycle helps, but doesn't solve it. Full delete of EGR is the only solution short of cleaning it out every 80-100,000km or so. For the ALH, it's pretty much the way it is. If you wish to keep the emissions system in tact, you pretty much just deal with it i think.

Ok, good to know. Aside from power loss though, I guess you can only tell by physically removing and inspecting it?

well, there is a little risk in just checking. If it is really bad and you pull the EGR off, you will likely disturb the crud, and there is more chance of a big piece going in to the intake.

So more or less, just take it off and clean it every 80-100k. I'm curious as to why CGDoig's was so clean...although I'm pretty sure he really takes care of his car!

2005 is a BEW, not an ALH (i think, at least). Not sure if the same rules apply here.

                        Correct.
I believe they still build up a bit but no where near the same level.

i have only had an issue with the alh .. (and fsi lol) pd only collect a small amount of crap arround the egr valve itself . also as far as some not carboning up . if your turbo has a bit of exxesive oil leaks into the airstream it will actually keep the intake clean . also if you have access to vag com once evry 20000 kms drive arround with the egr vacum hose off to clean it out

Got the car back together last night. Clean manifold and racepipe.

Went for a drive, drives a lot better at low speeds but once I hit 110km/h in 4th or 5th gear it will go into limp mode. Still the same code: 17958 - Charge Pressure : Control Deviation.
