Personally, in the jetta, traction control is ALWAYS off.

The passat....... well it doesn't have traction control.
That's a smart option too. Is your Passat 4motion / how do you like it?

      Re: Traction Control Disable

I have AWD, with winters. I try my best to get the back end to push out. It just doesn't. I drove the snot out of my Mk1, it slipped, you could lock up wheels at speed slide 100ft, like it was nothing. I never hit anything, never got stuck, never even had a close call. A little bit of driving skill, goes such a long ways. Relying upon a Computer to react for you, I believe is stupid. I like having no driving aids, really allows you to drive the car. Not the other way around, this any Soviet Russia.

We have TC in our RWD FJ, it turns off when you put 4WD. But it drives my dad and I nuts.

You go around a corner, you expect it to break, TC kicks in is doesn't break loose. Next corner same speed, it breaks, TC doesn't come on. It makes no sense.

I believe the point is that it will help when you don't have time to react in the best way, or the reaction will put the car off the road, ie: animals, **** flying off trucks on deerfoot, shitty highways that collect water in bad spots, random black ice. It's not intended to play with/push to it's limit. I've swerved enough crap on the highway with no incident, and I've never had anything like this in my car until now, I don't think that's a big feat. That said, I've also crossed over centerline/white line avoiding various living and dead creatures/rocks/barbecues/christmas trees/ice clumps between here and BC, and at that point, any inches that this can save you in lateral movement is a plus. It only really has to work once.

*and no comments about the 2 rocks I didn't swerve, that each busted my oil pan on separate occasions... Brent...

Yeah it is 4motion, it's a ton of fun, the only time i've ever got it stuck was when I rammed it into a 4 foot snowdrift and the front wheels lifted off the ground. Other then that with the winters on there the things a tank, I've been out in the snow when most wouldn't venture in a truck, and it just goes.

Ask any of the r32 guys, you'll probably hear the same.

Nice. The reason I ask is because I've never owned a haldex ride but am thinking of putting one in my GLI in about a year. The other option is to get an S4 but I really like the idea of a fully customized sleeper... just wasn't sure how the 4motion handles/feels. I'll put a HPA Gen1-competition controller in it if I go for it. Can you get the back end out?

                  Re: Traction Control Disable

TC has its pros and cons. I do find it annoying when taking a corner in the snow. It lowers the power, I find I have less control of the car where as I have better control with it off.
For me, traction control is more of a guide on the road surface. As soon as the TC light flickers on/off I adjust my driving style(i.e ease off power, adjust gears, feel the car through the clutch etc).

On a secondary note, once summer I was giving a friend a lift home. I switched off the TC and she started to panic....

                        I can second that

Should be a fun set up. From what i've heard, Quattro is better than Haldex, however i've never driven Quattro, and really have absolutely NO COMPLAINTS about Haldex. Winters are quite fun!!!

I was mistaken, you can only disable it with the vag com, for the default off you put a resistor in:

I think this has to be my biggest problem with the VW system (at least on the FWD cars). It is extremely unpredictable. I am all for TC but only when its done right. As I seem to state every year there just seems to be something not quite right with the VW system, and it makes the car handle horribly IMO opinion.

I actually did a test last year with my jetta on a straight road. From a roll I pinned it with the TC off and hands off the wheel, car stayed relatively straight, pulled slightly to one side and wheels spun of course. Then did the same thing with the TC on and it started pulling the car from side to side trying to correct for the wheels spinning, really not a very effect system IMO.
