One of my buddies with an older MK3 TDI called me today and asked about this product: http://www.powerservice.com/d911/default.asp?view=app

He has an inline heater and a battery pad like mine but the electrical at the building he is at in the SE industrial is sketchy at best when it is this cold. So if the engine does freeze up will it help?

I told him that he should be using an additive in the winter with every fill-up. Here are the ones I have tried with good success:

It will un-gel the fuel. However, I have never heard of anyone having their diesel gel around here. MAYBE if you filled up in the middle of summer, but it would need to be really cold.

Coolant heaters won't help this problem at all. Normally the fuel filter plugs with gel crystals.

Like Red90 said it's supposed to absorb the water trapped in the fuel filter. But I think it would have frozen by now.

No, 911 is designed to dissolve frozen gel crystals.

Ok, either way I think if it was going to gell it would have at -35C.

actually if you read their site, you are both right, it contains anti-icing agents to prevent filter clogging and damage as well as the ability to prevent the waxing of and/or re liquefy the paraffin in diesel (which will plug the filter as well), but now we are just splitting hairs aren't we...

Unless you have filled up and still have alot of diesel in your tank from WAY down south, you won't have to worry about wax seperation and severe gel. Canadian standards for diesel are higher for our Northern climate. You may however need to be concerned about water in your filter if you are parking in a warm parkade and then driving in this cold, condensation will occur if your tank is not full and end up in the fuel. I personally don't know of anyone who has had to use diesel 911. That said, if you are concerned...pick up a jug of Power Service, white one, its for winter and boosts the cetane number a few points.

you guys are sure putting a lot of faith in the stations or the delivery systems...

i got a tank of diesel from esso a few winters ago when we had that -55 with wind chill snap - it ended up gelling and freezing my fuel filter and lines.

could not get it heated/going for love or money for almost a week.

adding an additive gives a small piece of mind.

911 is not meant as a normal additive. It is meant for unfreezing a frozen vehicle.

Regular "white bottle" PS is for normal winter additive, which PREVENTS the problem.
