Most speeding tickets are ******** tickets the officer is doing because he is obligated to fill a quota, not because he is making the roads safer for the public.

Doing 140 on the highway to edmonton in light traffic is safe.
Doing 80km/hr on glenmore in moderate traffic in moderate weather is legal. Then why is it still 80 when the roads are clear and empty? Because it's nothing but a tax grab.

If I'm caught doing 100 in a playground zone, I will still fight it. I might deserve that one, but I'll fight it on the principal of all the other BS ones.

Edit: And even if you believe the ticket is legit, being taxed for it for the next few years via the insurance co is definately BS. That's why most people fight for a fine/no demerits.

I dont mind paying my tickets, I did the deed, and I will pay it, but really gets me angry is the effect that it has on my insurance. If I can fight a ticket, and get it turned into photo radar, then I will pay it with the biggest smile on my face because I know I wont have to take it in the a$$ from my insurance company.

When would you like them to do construction? During rush hour? Please. We should be happy the city is trying to aleviate some of the traffic by doing what they can during off-peak times.

I pretty much agree with you Paul. I got two tickets in two days in October... one photo (so it didn't count) and one I got pulled over for (in BC so it doesn't affect my points - i hope). I just paid them both no problems. I can definately see trying to fight for not getting points taken off... I would definately do that if I got a ticket in Alberta that wasn't photo radar. But don't blame the cop. They are only doing their job. If you don't like the traffic laws, call your Aldermen or your MLP and let them know. It's the job of Police to enfore laws - not make them up or ignore some of them. I'm not saying anything about quotas because I don't know much about them, but in the end it's not the cops fault (ie: the guy handing you the ticket).

And as for it being safe to do 140kph up to Edmonton... perhaps its safe for your car and your level of driving skill, but I know I've seen some cars on the road that shouldn't even be driving 100. They look like they are going to fall apart! Mix the two and you have a dangerous situation. All I'm saying is that there are many issues at play here and not just the speed limit of the roads.

I'll get off my soap box now.

There is a lot of conctruction that happens at all hours of the night, that is when they do most of the work on the Deerfoot for example. I rarely speed through construction sites, as I have been that poor sap standing on the side of the road, and really hate it when people would fly through there. As well, fines in construction sites are double what they are in regular place, so that is incentive enough for me to keep my speed down.

            Re: Fighting Speeding Tickets -Tricks/Tips?

I have my fair share of speeding tickets... I think about one per year (on average) since I've been driving. Yeah, some of them were totally legit. But occasionally I have felt that they were not. In any case, I have no problem pleading guilty since one way or another I was in violation of the law. I have no problem paying the full fine. I don't even have a problem if they take my license away after too many tickets.

My problem is with insurance companies. Pretty much everything about insurance companies. And every speeding ticket I get that adds points to my license means that I need to talk to someone at my insurance company. If I could I would burn their building to the ground and dance on the ashes of my insurance policy.

I agree with Kor. I mean, sometimes... this insurance industry bullsh*t just blows my mind. Like really, back in the day when I was "under 25", I was automatically lumped in with all the other so-called "crazy young male" drivers and made to pay a premium for my insurance. What is up with that?! Don't get me wrong, I understand that... for the most part, many young "under 25" male drivers are animals on the highway. However, it just doesn't seem fair for those of us who have never been in an accident their entire life. As well, why should I pay insurance which is based on average use of your automobile (20,000km) when I'm lucky if I put 10,000km on my car in 12 months?! What kind of a rip-off is that? Whether you drive 5km a month or 1,600km a month... you pay the same damn insurance! Check it out yourself if you don't believe me (www.melochemonnex.com).

On the vehicular front, it's the 55 year old ladies and the 95 year old guys for the most part that are the real menace to the highways. That aside, I sometimes wish police had the ability to pull people over and suspend their liscense for just plain driving like a "retard". And don't tell me you guys haven't seen it... driving around Cowtown... watching that car or SUV in front of you and thinking... "...Gee, I guess Driver's liscenses are mail-order now... cuz this idiot sure didn't take a driver's exam!"

So think of this the next time you get pulled over and read your rights by Smokie the Bandit... "Now why the h*ll haven't I bought a decent radar already.... Dammit!"

P.S. I got a Whistler 1490 for sale if anyone wants to help me upgrade to a Valentine?! (wink, wink)

No offence, but do you not have any morals? If you were doing 100km in a playground zone (not saying you would) you would actually fight that. Man, that is absurd. Playground zones are to keep your speed down incase some little brat runs onto the road so you can stop in time etc. Playground zone tickets are not ******** just because the others are.

Gah I have only one ticket and it was a stupid red light camera, those things are a kick in the balls since they raised the fines, at least no demerits though. But I went and saw the picture, because you're allowed to and there were four damn cars in the picture and I was the farthest ahead, but still I got the ticket. Anyways I spoke to the person and they let me off with some admin fee I think it was 75 bucks but that pisses me off, I'm sure that if those other cars had not been there the camera would not have gone off.

I understand everyones concerns. This is my first speeding ticket EVER. In 18 years of driving. So I know I'm not a crazy driver. I may have been speeding, but not sure if it was enough over to warrent a 123$ ticket. So I will court, as is my right, and try to fight it.

But this is some good fodder for the forums...

                        Thanks everyone for the input.

As I mentioned above, I don't have a huge problem with the fine (if the ticket is deserved) - it's the insurance raping I despise. Thus yes, even if it was totally my fault, I would fight the ticket tooth and nail to get fine only. Anyone who doesn't is a fool, or rich.

That's why you call a lawyer if you are ever arrested - even if you are guilty as hell. You may have morals but that won't save you from screwing up the rest of your life if you don't defend yourself.

qua better pay it.. BC and AB merged thier systems so if you get a ticket in BC they will kill u if you don't pay it but you don't get points or insurance crap whereas if you got one in saskwatch you wouldn't have to pay.. but here is the one catch.. say you don't pay it.. and go back and happen to get pulled over again or even at a check stop and they run your license well they'll see you have an unpaid huge ticket and will impound your car and toss you in the drunk tank

oh speaking of stupid insurance.. i saw a thing on the news tonight about a guy in edmonton who has a 100% clean record no nothings at all and is like 20 or 21 and his insurance co dropped him because when he moved he wouldn't give his roomates information to them so they said bye bye.. the news was working on getting him a better deal with another co or somecrap though but even so.. sheesh

I also was speeding down crowchild at 3 in the morning in a construction zone and i got caught, it was a $1200 ticket, i had to go to court and my license was probubly going to be suspended, not to mention my out of control insurance. So i hired one of thoes companies that help you fight tickets and they found that the cop wrote the wrong courthouse on the ticket and it got thrown out of court! I really had a horseshoe up my a$$. The $300 i spent paying the guy that helped me was well worth it! He even said that if the ticket got re-issused (they have 6 months to do it) that he would help me with that one free of charge since i already payed the $300. Sweet Deal!
