  • Fighting Speeding Tickets -Tricks/Tips?

I got a lame speeding ticket. I'm considering going to fight it in court, half because don't want to pay it, half becuase I think it would be a valuable experience.

Has anyone had any expericence in representing themselves and going to traffic court? I was given a ticket for doing 70 in a 50. Both the Estimated AND Radar/Laser boxes were checked. (isn't it either or?)

Also, is there any where to find out ( x speed = x amount) in terms of the ticket?

Thanks folks. Any info is helpful.

You SHOULD fight it, otherwise you will also end up paying more insurance and not having a clean driver's license. I have paid tickets in the past without fighting it, but after talking to people who have fought it I would never just pay outright.

As for tips, it depends on the ticket. If you were in a school zone in the morning or something, you'll have a hard time getting sympathy.

a buddy i work with fights every ticket but goes to see like some justice guy and not court like before court date and basically the guy says okay if you pay this ticket i'll make it a photo radar and he says okay and pays the ticket but gets no demerits and no record so next time he gets one they have no record of it !! haha so it kinda works every time.. he's been doing that forever..

Thanks! I got in on Memorial, heading east, right after 14st and before 10Ave Bridge. That little red brick building on the river. About 6:00pm (Dark)

Your best bet is to just be polite and ask for mercy.... like Ryan said you'll get the demerits dropped or maybe a reduced fine... if you want to get off scott-free well thats a little tougher.

How do you actually go about asking for mercy?

dont worry, i've gotten two bs tickets, and one serious one. the latter i'm still working on, but thats not in calgary, so i'm sol kinda.

anyway, regarding your ticket. i asked the prosecutor when i got mine to change it to photo radar, he said no problem. i asked at what point they dont do it. he said "AS LONG AS YOU'RE NOT EXCEEDING THE SPEED BY MORE THAN 20, COME SEE ME AND AUTOMATIC PHOTO RADAR".

now if you care about the fine too, thats another story. they might do 50/50. not sure, frankly i dont care about fines, only points.

there, enjoy the rest of your day.

Wow. That's pretty cool. Is that AFTER you plead not guilty (court date) or on the day stated on the ticket.

sorry for the nOOb questions! :P

the date on the ticket. go to one of the windows at the very end, not the fee windows, the first appearance ones i guess, where you say not guilty. say not guilty, and say you want to deal with the prosecutor. you then sit down, wait about 2-3 hours, speak with him, tell him you want photo radar, he says ok, sit outside again for another 15min, the judge calls you, goes over everything with you, signs your ticket, go pay it, and go home.

I haven't done it yet, but I've read you can go about a week or so after getting the ticket (takes time to get in the system) and ask to talk to the crown prosecutor. Just get there before 9am or you won't be seen. It's the courthouse on 7th I believe.

I tihnk it's kinda stupid when people go bitchin' and complaining about tickets. How is it BS? You were going over the speed limit were you not? Therefore it is illegal. I know I may try and fight one, but I just think when people call them BS tickets its silly.

well that depends paul.. like sunday night i was so close to probably losing my license on crowchild.. right up by that god damn bottleneck sarcee you know how there is construction sorta going on.. well at midnight!!! a stupid cop was there doing photo radar but pulling you over.. i went through doing 110 in the 50 zone and slammed my brakes on but he had 2 people already pulled over..

a ticket like that i would fight simply because who TF is doing construction at midnight..

but if its 3pm and i'm on 16th ave going 80 in the 60 zone then by all means yes i would deserve a ticket.
