  • 2.0 Engine head removal

Hi guys,So last Friday my engine blew the spark plug out from cylinder 3. I managed to make it home because I was only 5 blocks away. checked all the plugs and they were fine. I tried seating #3 back in but the threads were too damaged on the head. I called a few shops and they said it would be too difficult to helicoil the head without it being removed, which would be quite expensive for labor as well.

I want to try and replace the head myself although I’ve never done it before. Time is not an issue as I take the bus now. I have the Bentley manual and have read up some diys on the vortex. The car has 250K on it. I’ve only really done oil changes on the car so I am by far no mechanic. I have replaced the timing belt with the help of a friend and I thought that was a tough job. For those who have the knowledge and experience, how difficult is this task or am I in over my head? and advice or tips would be helpful.

sorry, now that i read what i posted i wasn't to clear, the question i was trying to ask is how hard is it to remove the head compared to a timing belt job?

It is likely a lot harder as there are lots of components that will need to be removed. Also without the right tools etc you will never get it all back together without the right help. I would find someone local that is willing to give you a hand for beer and pizza.

I wouldn't say it's that much harder than doing the timing belt.

Just have to remove the exhaust and intake manifolds and disconnect everything from it.

You'll need new head bolts though. They are one time use stretch bolts.

Not really that I can think of.

Would be a good idea to pick up some exhaust manifold studs and nuts as the old ones might come out on you.

I got my 2.0 head off and back on with a simple socket set and a set of triple square bits.

Bently has the correct torque procedure for the head bolts.

If you are following the correct procedure and from the book it shouldn't be to bad. Just pay attention and remember where everything goes. I would also get some penetrating fluid and make sure the sockets dont have abnormal ware so your not stripping anything. Also if anything looks like it should be replaced, I would replace it

What shop told you it was to hard to heli-coil? I've done a few and never had any issues. THe spark plug holes are easily accessable once you take the intake manifolds off. Get a second opinion....

you just have to be careful about metal shavings falling into the cylinder but it shouldnt be too hard for a shop to do

coat the drill bit with grease. really jam it in there. it will collect the shavings. slow your drill speed and clean up the shavings as you go. do the same for the tap.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3
