    Re: Passat TDI starting issues.

"injector damaged inside of injector bore. Scoring on bore itself"
"Material missing from head and injector, fuel leaking past when hot"
Also, Tandem pump had oil where oil shouldn't be.

    Replace a heap of stuff

    Car back on road. Yay!

This was obviously a pain in the butt to diagnose, but the service at SCFC was really good, so thanks to the advisers and techs that worked on my car.

I would have been pretty pissed if I bought this car with no warranty since it is obvious it was installed during a Mexican siesta.

this car hasn't seen mexico, its a WVW

Added up parts replaced on Impex/ECS and it was 4700$. Not sure if a complete head includes injectors. If not, the injectors are on top of that too.

                  Re: Passat TDI starting issues.

Had a few good starts, and tested the worst case (which was the short trip, with a short stop, then fire it up again), and it fired up no problem. I think it's fixed. Hopefully I can keep it out of the shop for a while now.

                    Re: Passat TDI starting issues.

Hmm, today I got the feeling that this problem wasn't solved. Had to run to a few shops today, and had a bad start in the middle of it all. Again, it cranked a lot more than it should before it caught. Maybe a freak bad start... I'll have to wait and see. I don't really know whats left to be wrong.

I also heard the bubbles again when I turned the key to 'on', just before cranking the engine over. Oddly, these bubble sounds only seem to happen when the tank is below half full. I've logged every start for a while and that seems to be consistent, although the poor starts and the bubbles don't occur in any pattern. The bubbles happen frequently, if not always when the tank is below half, the poor starts are much less frequent.

At least the work done was not a waste. There were definitely worn parts replaced. I'll have to try to duplicate the problem next week when I'm back at work. A short run out for lunch seems to be the scenario that brings out the problem every time, if it is in fact still there.

If it happens again I would take it back and throw the keys at them and give them their lemon back. What a pitb man.

Well, the saga continues. I finally got the bubble noises to happen at the dealership, which I think is a good clue to whatever it is that's going on since a few of you with the same car have confirmed it is not a normal sound. They are now going to re-check the check valve in the transfer pump in the tank. This it a part that was already swapped, but it seems that the new one is also suspect. Will know more tomorrow.

                                Re: Passat TDI starting issues.

They re-replaced the fuel filter an tee that I had replaced with a MANN filter shortly after I got the car and the re-replaced the transfer pump. Both possible suspects for poor fuel delivery. Going to come up with a plan B for next week because i think this car has a few people stumped now. The MANN tee and filter fit together looser than the OEM ones, so it stood out as a weak spot. Turns out it was fine. Oh well, gotta check.

Anyways, still frustrating that it can't be found, but the service has still been good, and I don't doubt that they've been trying, so whadaya do? It becoming routine to drop off the car, grab a coffee and get shuttled to work, so whatever... I just hope it will be found eventually. It lame sitting in a nice car with the engine cranking and people looking at ya like you've never had your car serviced, cause this baby get serviced weekly!
