I'm not sure what I'd do if I didn't have the warranty... Was well worth it in this case.
Something similar to what I am doing right now?

spending money always makes me feel better too after I've spent too much money
The timing belt interval on this car is odd. I think it was revised several years ago from 100k miles to 80k miles. VW Canada and the service dept. both told me it is now 128,000km. This is a drag for me as I'm at 110,000 now and it won't take long to get to 128k km (which is why I'm getting them to do it now, while the engine is already apart, it will be cheaper). The bigger drag is that in my conversations/emails to sales when I bought the car I asked when the big timing belt service was due and sales had said 160,000kms, and I pretty much used this info as part of my decision to buy since I was already at the upper end of my car budget and didn't want to spend another 1500$ on the car in the same year. I'm going to see if the sales guy can honour the info he gave me and if nothing else get me a good deal on this TB change, as I was pretty sure I'd be good for another 50k km, according to his emails to me prior to purchase.
We'll see how it goes. So far the service guys have been really good about my issues here, but this is more of a sales issue. See what comes out of it all.
I'm glad the car will be back on the road soon, and it should be for a while now! Got the 2011 Jetta again in the mean time.
I deal with tech central on some of the issues with semi trucks and somwtimes your like WTF are they thinking but you do it for warranty purposes . (starter being reolaced )
Here is what sucks about this, those of us that went in for the first recall and got told it was cancelled now can't be apart of this recall. So we are still stuck with the old problem plugs that caused all the EPA problems in the first place.
In terms of the timing belt, make sure they replace the water pump as well. The dealer that did my passat in Que just did the belt and no pump and almost cost me the engine. The pump pulley separated from the shaft and would have fallen off had the v belt tensioner not held it in there.
Another thing, many now are doing balance shafts with belts as there is a good chance you will have to replace that well before your next belt. Since you have to pull the belt to do the balance shaft many(those that know of the problem) have them both done at the same time. Most of the work on the passat's is pulling the front end out to get at it. Once you are there it gets real easy to work on.
Good luck, hope the new parts fix this stupid problem that won't go away.

Water pump was just done under warranty as it was leaking. Can the balance shaft be checked for wear?

I've gone this route before with another merchant, but only after trying to resolve the issue directly with those involved first. In this case with SCFC, it is disappointing to have received incorrect information from someone who should know the product they are selling, but I think you have to assume it was a mistake and give a chance to correct it before you get too carried away. SCFC has called me now, and the TB job will be done at a reduced rate, which works for me. So this issue is resolved.
