    Re: Passat TDI starting issues.

Regarding the glow plug part of this story, VW Canada tells me they are working on a fix for the end of November.

      Re: Passat TDI starting issues.

its the recall they did , it has done this to many of my customers . when they had it undone at the dealer it was fixed . this required a new ecu and a set of old glow bolts

        Re: Passat TDI starting issues.

why would a bad plug recall effect a start-up on an engine that is at operating temp?

              Re: Passat TDI starting issues.

you cannot go bacwards in flashes ( the computor wont let it ). so vw would have to write a new code to go back and they wont do it . they want to write a code that will use the new plugs and work . thats why

                Re: Passat TDI starting issues.

either way, VW canada called me today and are hoping to have a fix by the end of the month, so I'll get that done first and go from there.

Well that is retarded to say the least.

Hopefully they fix this problem better than the heat issues in the MK4.

Even so, engine is at 90 degrees, that quite a bit more than 20.

                        Re: Passat TDI starting issues.

I am close to being able to make this starting issue repeatable. If I start with cold engine, go for a short drive, so engine is warm, but not up to full operating temp, then shut off, wait 10 mins or so, start again. At this point it doesn't start well. It cranks and cranks and cranks (10+ times), then fires. There isn't a heap of smoke or rough idling once it starts. Its just as though it had no fuel for a moment. Basically, I'm noticing this most if I run out to get lunch or something. Short drive, short stop. I can't say it will do this every time, but this is when it it happening most right now. The car is going in to the dealership again on Friday. I'm hoping if I can make it more repeatable, they might have half a chance at diagnosing.

You need to install unitronics.......i don't have starting issues in mine.......cause of the unitronics

The warranty is proving to be useful... I think I'll wait until it is expired. It's on the to-do list though.

Did two short trips at lunch the last two days, then parked and tried to start 15 mins later and the problem happened both times. Both times there was next to no smoke on start-up either. (so not like what you see with a rough cold start)

                                Re: Passat TDI starting issues.

If it was a gas engine it almost sounds like leaking injectors. Floods and/or washes down the cylinder walls making compression really low.

I have no clue with a diesel though.
