  • TDI in a cabby

Looking for opinions about doing a TDI swap into my cabby. Has anyone seen or done one at all? If so what is it like with the top down?
I have a 99.5 donor car I might keep as it has some major hail damage to do a TDI swap into my 92 cabby. The only hesitation I have is what it will be like with the top down in city traffic.
Let me know what you think.

I dunno, I have a Saab 900 that "Smokes a bit" and sitting at the lights, it seems like the wind is always blowing back into the car no matter what direction the wind is blowing. If you like smelling like burned diesel go for it!! Or if you are never planning on driving the car with the top down when the engine is cold.... Of course a pro-heat would solve that.... What about a 1.8T that would probably throw that car around pretty good without smelling like a masey furgoson from 1970

i'm undecided... You certainly wouldn't want to go with big injectors or anything.

So far I have been unable to find a 1.8T parts car for a reasonable cost. If I was to go 1.8T I would want it to be a AWP (2002+) so I can go drive by wire etc and it seems to be the one with the least amount of parts hunting to get it to work.
The bonuses with the car I have now is I just did the timing belt, it has pp520 injectors and an upsolute chip. The 99.5's also don't have an immobilizer to deal with.
I should also note there are audi and new beetle convertible TDI's

Oh absolutely, I am a huge fan of the TDI it doesn't actually even smoke that much, but I can imagine that putting that kind of work into a car and then being disappointed with the results would be disheartening to say the least. It would be a little torque monster though, I bet you could get 1200k on a tank too!

I don't think I would be disappointed. I found a guy on youtube that have a cabby with a non turbo old diesel in it, now that would be a smoke monster.
At least it wouldn't smoke as much as this:

The car already has coils and front a rear sway bars so it would be awesome on a autocross course.

So the question now is who has an engine hoist and stand I can borrow for the winter?
