  • Buy a US MKV GTI?

Hey guys, I went to check out a 2006 GTI today, DSG, 2dr and really liked it. I haven't driven a VW since my 2001 1.8T 4dr Golf and I was quite impressed with the DSG too.

But I discovered it was a US import (could tell from the speedo, had the miles in outer ring, and also front plate bumper plugs also a sign that the car wasn't from AB).

I did a Carfax and confirm it's Illnois origin, but the car comes out clean from collisions etc. But now I'm torn to whether I want to purchase a US spec GTI vs Cdn one. The price is good and the mechancal seems good (I'll inspect it before handing cash over of course).

Also, the FSI engine is supposed to sound like a TDI right? Wasn't quite used to that.

Thanks for any feedback... man this car hunt has taken me all over the place..

Is it priced much more aggresively to the comparables?
    Private Sale? Dealer?

This motors do sound like a TDI, the 06 motor still has the old fuel pump location and can have issues with burning oil. There is a part that needs to be changed every 50K or to prevent this from happening. I don't see any issues with a clean US car as long as it has heated seats, would be a waste to buy a MKV GTI and not get the heated seats considering you live in Edmonton.
Current: Golf R and a corporate lease nobody cares about

Yeah I can't remember if it had heated seats or not, but I think the US cloth seats don't come heated. its a private sale and the price is about 16k, I'd say that's quite a bit lower than any dealership (though they have some lower km choices). Seems like even a 2006 goes for about 20k

Gonna double check on the heated seats, good point

Yeah no heated seats...but at the price I think it might not be deal breaker...But I do know how it felt when I had my mk4 and lusted over (ended up buying piece by piece on Vortex) all the 337 aluminum trim and etc.

Any opinion on what a good MKV GTI price should be? I'm looking with DSG so my wife can drive it too -nope not gonna go with the "she can learn" route
