  • Separating trim around shifter from main console

Anyone have any tricks for this? I just pulled the console on my mk4 jetta to dinoc the part around the shifter as that stupid matte coating is peeling. I was thinking of using a heat gun and a blade/screwdriver but I don't want to deform the plastic, any hints?

huh well after fighting with it for a bit I kinda gave up, I am wondering if there is any chemical that might be plastic safe but could dissolve the glue a bit?

that is a good thread, unfortunately my goal is to actually separate the two parts of the console so I can di noc around the shifter. The two pieces seem to be held together by a very strong glue:

Just buy a new console. Pretty inexpensive!

They don't come apart is it is one piece. If you want to destroy it you can cut it apart and glue it back together somehow. Many people have wrapped them with no problem so maybe look into it a bit more.

oh yea no it has nothing do with price, that matte finish never lasts on those consoles so I figured I would di-noc it and see how I like it.

I know for a fact it is two pieces as you can clearly see the mating surface and the glue holding it together, I was actually able to get a few inches free so I know they will separate with some work but it was just too much work to continue so I wanted to see if anyone had any tricks. I don't want to just wrap it in place because it will not look right as the di-noc wrap is to thick to just shove in the crack between the two pieces so it will have be heated and stretched nicely around it. I don't think I am breaking new ground with this, this has to have been done before, I have a few ideas I might try.
