  • Oil Filter help

Im having a nightmare removing the oil filter from my car. The bugger wont budge.
I went to Canadian Tire and got the oil wrench removal tool (both types). I can't get either to work as there is hardly any room place it under the mess of pipes and wires. The other option is the type of removal tool which is like a cap that fits over the filter. Canadian Tire did not have one that fits. Now Im stuck at home without a vehicle to borrow so I can't go elsewhere....
Any other ideas how to get this off?

the metal socket style one I have works well and should fit. I don't think there is much hope of me helping though as I'm at work and the tool is in Hidden Valley, but I'd order one once this is all done. It just fits on a 3/8" drive ratchet. I got it from Metalnerd.

Poke a screwdriver through it and use it as a wrench. Some people have had success with this. Probably messy though.

I can give you a hand with it, I have the socket type wrench as well. Won't be able to help tonight though.

                        Re: Oil Filter help

                        Thanks for the posts guys.

Ive added the new oil, Ive checked the oil level and its barely at half way? Wheres it all gone...? I added 4.4 liters...

Stefan, the Metalnerd socket worked a treat, many thanks. I used the larger socket extension and the oil filter came off first time.

                        From Random

So this was the story for those bored at work and need some light entertainment. I got my new tool set delivered the other day. So I thought life is good, so I'd change my oil and sparks.

I started to jack the car with a hydralick jack and it turns out there was not much space to put the jack stand. Bummer. So lowered the car, moved the jack a bit more over and put in the stand. As I lowered the car slowly I saw the rail slowly start to bend. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
I stopped and ran to the computer and seached for jacking points on the 1.8T. I found another spot right under the car. So once again jacked the car up and this time I had the stands on the right spot.

So I crawl under the car, look at the oil pan and I can't find the nut. WTF? So I run to the internet again and google MK4 oil pans. Then I realise its not under the pan but facing backwards. Duhhh!
So Ive drained the oil and im reaching for the Oil filter and ive moved the oil collecting pan as its just the odd drip....... Now the oil filter wont budge. I ask my cousins and they can move it. My bro in law has a go...nothing. Oh bugger....

So this morning I get up early and borrow my sisters truck and zoom to Canadian Tire to buy the oil filter wrench. I speed home and when I get to the garage I find the single odd 'drip' that was coming out of the oil pan that I thought was empty last night was....er..... well it was not empty..... Lots of oil under the car..... fml
Whats worse is the oil filter wrench is too small. FML
So I run back to Canadian tire, I buy a bigger fitting tool and I also buy one of those Oil grabbing plier type wrench's. So if one does not work the other will. Can't go wrong eh?
I get home, my sister takes the truck and goes to work. Both tools fit but there is no space to turn the tool. FFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
It gets worse. I get a text from my manager at work asking me why im not at the meeting scheduled at Noon...
I text her back and explain...my er...oil change is not going too well......

In the end I got it off and Oil change was done, and new sparks were added. New rear brakes are going to be done next week.

                          Re: Oil Filter help

For future referance there are little notches in the lower bodywork that tell you where to jack the car. Make sure oyu have the right tool to do the rear brakes. You need to rotate and press the rear caliper piston in otherwise you will destroy them.
Ohh and in the future if you car calls for 4.5L of oil, add 4L, let the car idle and heat up. Check level again and add as needed. That way you should never overfill the oil.

Thanks for the info. I have the special tool and filled up just under 4L then started the car. I checked the oil level this morning and its fine (its magically appeared!).

Also oil the o-ring on the new filter before you put it on and dont over tighten the new filter. Ive had to use an air hammer to get some filters off at work (semis)
