  • ASR stuck on?

So driving today and wound out my car on a straight but somewhat damp stretch of road, ASR is off. As I go through the gears the ASR light is flickering on and off, no biggie. But into 4th gear the light comes on solid and stays on, untill I shut the car off, and then everything is normal.

    This happen to anyone else?

I think I have seen this reported on the VWVortex. Do you have a VAG-COM or access to one? It would be useful to see if any codes were thrown.

That's never happened to me. I do however, get a violent start sometimes on slippery roads. Is this the EDL?

          Re: ASR stuck on?

Weird. Maybe if there is a loss of traction for long enough ASR comes on by itself? Maybe it was a glitch that corrected itself?

Hey Blair, do we still have access to a vag-com? If so I wouldnt mind checking it out at the next meet.

Yea, EDL is , I think, that strange grinding noise that comes from your front end when you lose traction. Different than ASR though, which cuts power to the drive wheel(s). Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Too bad VW didnt have ESP back when I got my car.

That noise is the anti-lock break system engaging. All EDL is is your computer calculating that one wheel is spinning faster than the other and engaging the ABS to slow down the fast wheel. That's why it's "electronic". There are no mechanical differentials from what I understand.

no bill this noise isn't the sound of the ABS.. i was leaving an intersection when this went on and from my searching on vortex last night it is the EDL kicking in.. but it is like you said.. the computer will brake a wheel completely then transfer all power to the other one so that if you are stuck your not going to be digging a hole with the one wheel.. but it onl works at like 20km and under then ASR and or ESP take over

So what is EDL then? I did a little reading on this a while ago, and maybe I was drunk or high or something, but I remember reading that there is no dedicated EDL system... I don't think there is some kind of mechanical system which is EDL. EDL is simply a term which refers to the system of sensors, a computer, and individual wheel braking (using the ABS). Therefore, when you hear EDL working, you're *actually* hearing the ABS function of the EDL working. You're certainly not hearing the sensors or the computer working.

Let me know if I'm wrong because I hate being wrong, but that is my understanding of how the system works.

Interesting...Come to think of it, the sound does sorta sound like the ABS going. I never put the two together cuz I have my foot on the gas instead of the brake. Thus, don't get that ABS pulsation through the pedal like you normally would through the brake. Hmmm.

This happened to me too. It was a wheel sensor, Tim fixed it! Sometimes the sensor will plug with crap and cause an error code, or the sensor is screwed. Anyways have them clean the sensor, if that does not work then have them replace it. If the computer gets to many codes from the sensor then it shuts down tha abs and asr. It happened to me on my 337 when it was brand new. It really sucked cause it only happened when it was snow and icy, when i really needed it. Yeah good luck! If the dealer is not cool about talk to Tim, he is th god of vws. Does anyone here have problems with keeping thier wheels balanced in the winter? I park my car in a heated garage, and the wheels always seem to come out of balance. Even with no snow or dirt on them?

Mine always gets snow stuck to the inside of the rim causing the wheel to go out of balance.

how can you tell/know if they are out of balance? when it snowed hardcore earlier this winter all 4 of mine were completely filled up with snow in them but as soon as i parked it melted all off from being inside.
