Hey everyone, so it appears I may have a bad wheel bearing in the rear so I will be replacing the hub assembly. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get the new hub assembly on, I've read a DIY and the person used a piece of wood and a hammer to pound it on enough to get the axle nut on and used the axle nut to pull the hub assembly on, now to me this seems a little hack-ish so I was wondering if anyone had any tricks to get it on.

Re: Replacing Rear hub on Mk4
Thats how I have done my last two, did see the write up, just seemed like the right thing to do. Hammer and wood took a minute, then using the air gun on the nut another 10 secs. Took longer to get it off then put it on if I remember right.Ben

Re: Replacing Rear hub on Mk4
^^ Thats how I did mine.
Pulling it off isn't too bad with a 2 or 3 leg puller, expect the inner race to stay on the spindle. That can be a little tricky to get off, but if the puller is the right size it should be able to grab it. Oh, and you need a big (30mm?) 12 point socket to get the hub nut off. I have the socket and 2 leg puller if needed to borrow.
There is a special tool for installing the hub that is like a nut but extends the treaded section inside to grab the spindle when the hub is out, but if you're only gonna do it once I wouldn't spend the $$ unless you can borrow.Jeff

Re: Replacing Rear hub on Mk4
awesome thanks for the great info guys, looks fairly straight forward to do, and it will be a good excuse to pick up more tools haha.
Any ideas as to where to purchase one, basically I leave tomorrow to the field for a week, come back and have 5 days to prep the car for a 1200+ km road trip, so I don't really have time to wait on one to be shipped from ecs or something, but I also don't want to go to the dealer if they are going to charge an arm and a leg.
I saw that napa has a few part #s for the hub, wondering if this would be an ok option. I don't usually put anything but oem replacement parts on the car but if they have it in stock it might be the route I go. Suggestions?Last edited by J-hop; 08-27-2010, 12:43 AM.
