  • Anyone know this car????. Thinking of buying it.

Looking at this GTI and they say an Audi tech has recently worked on it. Wanting to know if anyone knows this car and can lend some insight. Im thinking of buying it but would like the "inside scoop" if anyone has one. They say it has 266XXX km's on car, but only 60XXX on new motor/turbo setup. Asking $6995 cuz the mileage I'm assuming.

    Thanks kids.

        Hey Mike

Ask to see a carfax on the car. Maybe its from out of province or city where an Audi tech owned it. Its always good to see this info anyway...

Hmmm, good to know. I hate being at the mercy of another shop working at one myself......I know the ins and outs so to speak.

Sounds like typical sales jargon to me. The guy said "the motor and the turbo system was all replaced about 66XXX km's ago", and that "the car is unbelievable". Im gonna head over and see it I think just so I can say I did. How knows, maybe its ****, and maybe its a good one with high K's. Figured something like this would be "known" in the big yet small world of VW in this city.

I bought my S4 from them and had absolutely no issues. To date, the car runs great, when you buy a used car there is always the possibility of it being a lemon. Just make sure you get it checked out.

Also, don't believe everything on beyond. They were always upfront about everything with me and it was a pretty smooth buy from my end.

Re: Anyone know this car????. Thinking of buying it.

I bought my A4 from there in May. Was not overly impressed with the salesman/owner I dealt with (Adrian), but did get a good vibe off the other owner of the company Justin.

I have also heard from a number of people after I bought my car that they have been sleazy in the past, but seem to be stepping up their game now that they are moving away from the highly modded tuner cars and into the higher end cars and SUVs.

Just for reference, here's my experience there:
I looked at the car on a Wednesday around 4 PM. There was no one around in the building, not at the front when I walked in or in the warehouse. Had a look over the car I was there to see. Tracked down the receptionist to get the keys so I could look inside. She did the "oh, this is my favourite car in here", asked if I was serious about getting the car and went to get the manager (Adrian). We talked numbers briefly, arranged for a test drive the next day. Test drive went fine, arranged financing on Friday and picked up on Tuesday.

They did a mechanical inspection, replaced the rear brakes, cracked windshield and did an oil change before I picked up the car. Within a couple weeks I was having intermittent oil pressure warnings. I chalked it up to a bad sensor because it was very random, and bought the sensor to replace it. Before I could replace the sensor something got choked and the car started to sound like a tractor, and threw a cam timing code (IIRC) so I had it towed to Royal Oak Audi (closest to my house), $150. Audi had it for 5 business days, but couldn't replicate the problem, and it was running "fine" when they diagnosed and test drove it. They recommended changing the sensor, so I took the one I bought to them and asked them to change the oil because I didn't know what brand/grade Gallery of Fine Cars put in. When I picked the car up ($450) the tech told me the oil was filthy and sludged. Car has been running fine now for 2 months.

I went back to Gallery of Fine Cars to see if they would at least reimburse me for the oil change ($115). Adrian told me I should have had the car towed there for his tech to look at (probably $200+ from my house), and he could have changed my oil for free. He then informed me that they only use Pennzoil there and "that is what they use at Glenmore Audi" where his tech came from. I have my doubts about that, they used Castrol Syntec at Royal Oak.

So in the end it was aggravating, a bit expensive for the "repair", but not the end of the world. I wouldn't recommend them unless you know what you are getting into. It is a used car so there are no warranties regardless of what they say, get it checked by a third party to be sure.

I was going to trade my MK4 1.8T actually this week for an BMW X3, thanks Jeff -- I'll stay away from that place.

No No No, I got the hint!.

I appreciate all the input. I understand that a used car is just that, and something with that many KM's, and apparently that many modifications and major repairs is probably something I should stay away from. I have a fairly good ability to fix/repair/modify cars so the fact that someone has "had their hands on in" in the past doesn't scare me too much, however this purchase would mean the sale of my current pride and joy and I just dont think its worth it - None of you care about my reason for buying/selling Im sure - But again, I do appreciate the information. Working in the automotive world you soon realize that word of mouth does actually mean something. Its really easy to get a bad reputation based on one or two bad experiences and is even more difficult to recover from them, however even though its only $7K, its still $7K that I dont just have collecting dust, or burning a hole in my pocket.

Again, appreciate the information. The hunt will continue.

That thing about the Pennzoil is completely BS. All VW and Audi dealers are told to use Castrol by head office. And if the oil got that sludged only 2 months later, then I can almost be certain that they did not change the oil. I'm surprised you're so cavalier about this. I would rage for sure. And after reading the four links that Cam provided, I would surely stay away from Gallery of Fine Cars.
