  • vnt 17 overboostt

so i have a 01 jetta tdi and just finished installing a vnt 17. the problem i am having is that its boosting really high, i know the turbo is waste gated at 22 psi, but im getting spikes off my 30psi gauge and sustained at around 28 psi. i have tried adjusting the wastage rod, and all it does is make it boost slower to that same amount of boost. i have thested the wastegate with a vacuum pump and it is opening completely at 18 inches of merc.
the other mods i have are a 3.5'' downpipe back exhaust, pp520s, 11 mm pump and a egr delete
any insight would be great thanks

What chip you running with this? Most would turn back and say to go back to who ever chipped your car and ask them.

You got a boost valve installed? Those usually help with overboost issues too.

Personally I would never play with anything on the turbo, that is just asking for trouble. By the sounds of it you need a boost valve and some proper programing.

Agree.. boostvalve is a must. Don't adjust turbo. I had the same thing on my TDI for a day or two until my boost valve showed up. Got it from http://boostvalve.com/.

Boost valve and retune. Maybe moniter it with vcds if you have access.

                  Re: vnt 17 overboostt

So let me see if I got this right. You're running a bigger turbo, bigger nozzels, bigger fuel pump on a stock chip with no boost valve, no boost gauge, no egt gauge and you haven't run vcds to adjust your injection quantity because it's probably out of wack with the bigger pump. You say your too lazy to get a credit card? You're missing half of the required components to run that setup. Are you still running a regular intake pipe to the turbo too? If you're too lazy to do it right, why even bother asking for help?

easy boys, easy! it was like 2 am and i was in bed, i didnt feel like walking out to my car to get my wallet to order a boost valve at that very second! not trying to sound like a douche
the iq was adjusted when the pump was installed. i do have boost and egt gauges installed, thats how i knew the turbo is over boosting. as for the list of modifications they were pretty much installed in order of what i was told by someone i considered to be in the know. i put nozzles in when i first got the car. i stumbled upon a 11mm pump for next to free, and just waited to have it installed when i did my t belt a month after i got the car. as for the turbo, i bitched the stock vnt 15 and figured there ws no point buying a stock one to wreck down the road again.
im sorry if this question seemed rather daft, but in the future instead of making all these assumptions maybe a few questions would be in order first.
i only came on the forum to get insight from people that know more about this stuff than i do. sorry if i inconvenienced your life in any way

At any rate, with a chip and nozzles, you will spike like crazy with no boost valve. Get that in there, and then I'm sure guys here can help with the finer tuning details.

and you're lazy comment did sound a little absurd.... Ya, it was taken out of context, but you have to admit that it lessened how serious you're tuning plans the way that it reads now.

If you are serious about your tuning, you will find a lot of good advice here.
