  • Engine Tick

I was driving home last night and I noticed a fan like ticking noise coming from the engine. Sound like the the normal engine noise but just a higher pitched tick. Im guessing spark plugs as ive not changed them in a while. Car drives fine. But when Im waiting at the lights and listening to the engine, its not the 'normal' engine noise.
I would not be worried, but im In Edmonton this weekend and I drive back to Calgary tomorrow night. I don't want the poor bugger dying on me on the drive back.
It does not seem like a big thing, but its playing on my mind now as im totally noob when it comes to engines. Can anyone shed some light as what it could be..?

    Any advice/ideas appreciated....

    Re: Engine Tick

Most vw/ audis have some sort of valve tick.
I don't know what causes this, but it's hard to stay away from

As said lifter tick gets louder as the engine gets older and I have heard it on tons of VW/Audi cars.

Heavier oil weights can also shut it up a bit, But be it 8V, 16V or 20V mine have all had it.

I just had the oil change with George at Tune Dub last Wednesday. I drove to Edmonton the following Friday. I noticed the tick very late that evening.

I spent a bit of time today just googling this and getting mixed opinions. There is technical talk about valves etc. But the trend is leaning towards it being a normal thing....

yea i've found vw engines are pretty loud in comparison to other vehicles, when I bought my vr I thought something was wrong with it but it is quieter than any other vr i've heard so i guess they are just naturally loud.

only reason i asked is because its been pretty hot lately and thought you might be due.
