  • First Under Hood Mods?

I have so many questions to ask already. On the TDI what should be the first couple mods under the hood I do? I'm not looking for stupid power thats going to fry my turbo, and clutch within a year of doing it. Moderate power increase with less headaches later. I'd rather post these here because hearing it from locals feels more personal than some of the ***holes on vortex.

    Re: First Under Hood Mods?

Theres a couple pretty knowledgeable tdi guys in the club here. I'm not in that group, but from the research i've done i'd say bigger nozzles, and the tune to match. Exhaust wouldn't hurt either, i'd just throw a 3" turbo back straight pipe on if it was me, an exhaust shop could do it on the cheap.

Pretty sure you want either new injectors or nozzles and some decent software.

Software in some mid sized injectors is where you want to start and likely where you will stay otherwise you are into the new turbo type zone. Changing the exhaust will not get you much in the way of gains at all. Some even say you loose power due to less back pressure on the turbo (remember they are VNT).

What Year of TDi? 5 speed, auto?

Let us know that, and I will let you know what mods are good, and which ones won't help you much.

In terms of the exhaust, don't bother upgrading it unless you are running more then a stock turbo. 2.5 inches is plenty, and a 3 inch will only add more weight to the car making it slower and less economical.

Depending on the year, but assuming no newer then a 2003, ie non PD.

Nozzles, PP520's are a good assuming you have a 5 speed, if an auto I would probably stick to the sprints.

Chip, well get a stage 1 tune with bigger nozzles, stage 2 locally is a good choice as most stage 2's have turbo upgrades programed in.

And remember, now with the extra power, your 5 speed is going to need a new clutch soon, and if you have an auto, well its doomed to go power upgrades or not.

Keep that in mind, PD nozzles are a whole different story and I would stick to a chip only probably. Only thing is I would still keep in mind the clutch change as many PD owners have had the Dual Mass flywheels explode taking out a piece of the tranny as well.

Just my 2 cents, also stick to TDiclub for your TDi stuff, vortex is more gas orientated I find.

^^^ It in fact is a 2005. So PD yes. 5spd yes. I dont even think this info will help much now that you've answered the question pretty much in full. But any info from guys who have a similar situation would be great. Thanks.

Stick to the Chip, best bang for your $$, and keep in mind a new clutch and flywheel though. Don't go back stock, look at your VR6 options as they are typically cheaper and will last longer.

Alright sounds good. Ever done a lightened flywheel and HD clutch replace combo? Pros?

                  Re: First Under Hood Mods?

yes I had a VR6 clutch with a lightened flywheel in my 1.8T, drove great and held the load that the big turbo kicked out.

Might not want to go lightened with the flywheel as it may cause more vibration then you would like. I know Stephen had a VR6 clutch setup but I am not sure if his was lightened.

It may not get you much in gains, but it sounds great!

The sound is not that much different then stock, a tiny bit louder and a bit more woosh.

I know, a straight piped tdi won't be that loud.. but it does sound better! All personal opinion, I guess.
