  • Fuel Filter - 1.8T MKIV Jetta

Has anyone tried to change their fuel filter on the 1.8T MKIV Jetta? It appears as though you need special tools to remove the fuel line connectors. ECS Tuning has these pliers:

Any other way to remove the connectors without the tool?

    Thanks in advance.

Just grab a pair of needle nose pliers, and watch your eyes.

Make sure not to let anyone open the driver door when its disconnected either, the pump will prime.....

Tried pulling it off with a screwdriver etc. The sucker is on there real tight. It looks like a special connector. I don't want to break it! Not sure if the connectors changed but this one is for a 2003 Jetta. According to the Bentley manual, this is a lifetime filter so I guess they made it hard to change.

When u look at the filter, clean off the ends really well. That way u will notice where u need to push. I spent a good 10 min pushing at the wrong spot for the life of me. Then i looked at it a little closer and it all made sense when i found out where exactly to push.

          Best of luck.

            Compton,

It is perfectly clean as the car is barely winter driven. I can see that there are a couple of indents. The problem is that I don't want to break the connector by pushing a screwdriver through the connector. Do you have to twist it or push into both points at the same time?

Sorry for all the questions. Just frustrating...

Push the 2 tabs in at the same time and pull it off, and there will be fuel.

I did mine with no special tools and I don't remember any fuel at all coming out either.

But follow the DIY exactly, the tabs are weird.

You can use a screwdriver to push on the clips, but make sure u use the flat part and not the pointy part of the screwdriver. If that made any sense lol.

Push them at the same time and they will pretty much come off on their own.

On one side the clips are located on the sides and on the other side they are at the top. But read the DIY to be 100% clear as its been a while since ive done mine.

Thanks guys for all your help. VW Vortex's archives are down so even though you complete a search, the threads are all down.

do an advanced google search in the vwvortex domain for the thread you want then click "cached" and you should still be able to see it.

edit: you may have issues looking at multiple pages but most small DIY will have all the info and pics you need on the first page

I did post a pretty good DIY for you though earlier...

There will be a link in the mk4 forum, DIY thread at the top. Just find fuel filter in the topics.

EDIT: Whups I see what you mean, link is bad. I will check if I saved it - I have a habit of archiving that sort of thing.
