  • MK3 OEM Stereo guru needed.

I ordered a replacement head unit for my jetta because ever since the dealerships had that stereo blow out, they are dirt cheap.

So the old and new units look identical from the front, but the part numbers are different.

    Looks like this one:

Exisiting unit is: 1HM 035 186 D - this works with the changer in the trunk.

New unit is: 357 035 186 JX - Radio and tape work but will not talk to changer.

My first thought is that it was defective, but maybe it is different? I thought it was the only 'Premium' one for this year.

My existing one is Clarion built. My only thought is that the one I got was the Bose built version (I think there may have been two versions depending on where car was built.. but I'm not 100%). I don't know if that makes any sense though.

I'm just trying to figure out if this deck is defective or incorrect.

    Thanks!

well, I found a vortex post where a guy had the same issue with two of these re-manufactured units. It seems like the pins are not arranged the same to the CD changer. Not sure if this is the case, but does anyone have a digram that shows what the cd changer output pins on this deck are supposed to be?

The Matsushita units (which is what the re-man ones are) have different pinouts than the original Clarions. Gay.

I can try to make up an adaptor, but who know if it is even compatible...

Stonewall may have an old head unit anyways, so there may be no point in trying to fix this.

If they are different makes they are likely not to work with each other as you found out. Stupid that VW did that but not to surprising.
