I took my car in today for it's 32k service. all went well, except I have a bad boost control thingy, no problem, warranty. BUT......

the dude continues to tell me that my rear brakes are down to 5% and need to be replaced. okay, I guess that I can accept that. although, rear brakes shouldn't wear out that fast, maybe they are just really small pads and aren't that thick (I know that Acura uses real small pads for rear brakes). The thing I have a big problem with is that they wanted to charge me $488.66 to do just the brakes. WTF!?!?! I'm just gonna do it myself and save myself a whole sheitload of cash. European cars are cheap to maintain.

Man, that should be covered by warranty. I had my rear pads and rotors replaced for free this summer at about 21K km. From what I understand, VW were first using pretty soft rear pads on the MKIV's to avoid brake noise. The downside was that they wore out incredibly fast, so somewhere along the line they started using harder pads.

I had a 99.5 golf, and I was incredibly hard on the brakes always (plus it was auto so that increased brake use).

I checked the pads and they were all perfect, everyone thought they'd be bare.

our rear brakes aren't the simple push-back-in piston style. The piston must be rotated as you push it in... like screwing it back into the caliper... have fun. The fronts are hella easy.

When I bought my car this week I had it inspected at 5th Ave, they said my rear brakes are down to 20% left and were charging $440 to change.

The old owner of the car and I split the cost.

not really... my friend with a Gti just had an accident a couple days ago and teh estimation was 9000 dollars!!!
