  • I need tdi guru help.

Hey, i'm fairly certain there is a couple pretty knowledgeable tdi guys on the forums. I'm looking to trade my mk4 golf for a mk3 tdi + cash. I phoned the guy, and he is full of ****. Says he is a mechanic and that he worked for a vw dealer in edmonton (not sure about this, its possible. the full of **** part was about something else), some of the parts he listed I recognized, however he claims there is an upgraded turbo among other tdi goodies on it. I do not know enough about tdi's to pick out the truth from the bs. I am waiting on pictures of this car, and if its clean.. I want to check it out. I know this is a big favor to ask, but if any one of you guys that could help me check this car out i'd buy ya a case of beer or something. This would involve you driving halfway to Edmonton with me (don't worry i'm not a rapist or anything), checking out the car.. and driving back possibly in the other car with me.

If anyone is interested please pm me. Name your terms, lunch, beer, anything but sexual favours.

    I'm sorry............I had to haha.

Can you possibly post more details of exactly what he said? Plan on getting it inspected prior to purchase?

My advice is do not go into a deal if you do not know enough to judge if it's a fair one or not.

Putting it on someone else to help you make the call is a recipe for disaster...

Man thats a creepy dude. Haha. He says the car has an upgraded garrett turbo, full 3" turbo back (I obviously knew what some of this stuff meant), egr gauges, digital boost gauge, tuned for the new turbo, I forgot to ask if he got nozzles, but i'm assuming he did if he had it tuned. But then he went on to say some stuff like "oh yeah you can stuff an rb20 right into it, thats like 430 horsepower" and later than he "has a 75psi blow off valve () and other turbo that will get you like 350 horsepower". He also said that the shifter bushings were replaced, but that you have to "slide" it into second gear because of them. He said it doesn't grind, but that you have to shift a certain way. That confused me. Some of it was bs and I knew it. But the guy is willing to give me a good trade, and if the car is nice and sound then i'm gonna do it, even if he is full of crap.

Thats what i'm thinking right now. I'll wait for the pictures. And i'll get him to write an email with the mod list and stuff. That way i've got it in writing, and i'll show you guys. As of now im skeptical, but if its nice I don't know.

As soon as someone sais blowoff valve and TDi in the same conversation I walk away. The best I can say is get a full write up and do a quick search on on the parts on the tdiclub.com.

Actually it could have a pop-off valve which acts as a safety valve to make sure that the engine doesn't get too much boost. It's basically a spring loaded valve that will be forced open at a certain pressure (in this case 75 psi). Many early turbo cars had them, before they had accurate boost control.

I'd look at it with a knowledgeable TDI person, if it was tuned correctly it could be a monster. So far, everything I've read sounds very possible.

blow off on a TDI is odd. should be a VNT on that, even if it is upgraded, no?

IMO Buying any moderately/heavily modified car (unless you know, or know of the seller first-hand) is a recipe for disaster.

Aside from that... buy as OEM as you can and do the mods yourself. Then again... if you're going to say stuff like "... if the car is nice and sound then i'm gonna do it, even if he is full of crap."... I'm sorry dude... even us Eurodrivers can't help you.

                        Best of luck.

I definitely spoke too soon where you quoted me there. I'm trying to find all sorts of ways justify buying an mr2! I'm gonna pass on this one, he hasn't even emailed me the pictures. If anyone knows anyone that wants to trade up from a mk3 to a mk4, let me know! Or a b5 a4, or hell an mr2 but thats about it.

I change my mind way too much, should probably stop that.

For the record, this was my thinking. Not the pop off valve thing, blow off and tdi = someone who doesn't know about them, but lots of the things he listed seemed very possible, hence me wanting to check it out with a knowledgeable tdi guy.

well, i think most of the guys that commented are knowledgeable TDI guys, and none of them thought it was even worth the trip, so you probably made the right decision.
