  • Raceland Coilovers??? vs. Stage 1(+) Unitronic

    Hi all,

So Im thinking about saving up some more, university is taking its toll on me, Plus trips with buddies, for either a set of raceland coilovers or a unitronics tune. I wanted to get opinions on what you guys know/think.

What does everyone know about the raceland coilovers?http://www.racelandus.com/p-62-racel...udi-a3-8p.aspx All I know is they're cheap and will work! However I dont know how they're going to hold up to snow/gravel, and possibly lots of rain as I may switch to UBC in 2 years time. Im not looking to go tucked tire or anything, I just want maybe a 2 inch drop on my 2009 Rabbit.

Otherwise, I may go tune first. Im thinking probably Unitronics Stage 1+, or maybe just Stage 1. Is it possible to loose the tune? Or will it always be ok???

What do you guys think I should rather do? Due to put my summers on... Not that they're very nice to save money I bought some 15" alloys last year, and put on the stock all seasons, then this winter I put some blizzaks on the steelies. Maybe one day I'll have some 18", however I doubt that will be for several years!!!

Thanks for any advice, Soon I'm due to get a BFI installed by Mike for my first mod!

Don't put racelands on a MK5. There cheap for a reason. I put them on my MK3 GTI because the car isn't worth paying $1500 bucks on in suspension mods. I don't see much gain in the upgraded re-flash either. Unless you have supporting mods, its worthless in my opinion.

I say, save for a good set of koni, H&R, or even k-sports coil-over kit and then put that in first. That will be the best "seat-of-the-pants" mod, next to a forced induction mod like a S/C or Turbo.

Cheap coilovers are your worst nightmare when modding a car. Pretty much any professional you ask will tell you that if you are going to cheap out on anything, do not cheap out on your suspension.

IMO if you are on a budget make due with a spring/shock cup kit. Otherwise get coilovers that are built like a tank.

Alright, so it sounds like racelands are out. Are vmaxx coilovers still considered too cheap, to be good? http://concept1.ca/SUSPENSIONS/Vmaxx%20Coilovers.htm, because basically after them everything is over 1k I believe, plus $450 for install and alignment

Vmaxx isn't the greatest either from what I've been told. If you want a good suspension set-up while on a budget, then a spring and shock combo is what you should consider. I used Koni ("yellows") adjustable dampening shocks with H&R lowering springs on my Sentra, and the ride quality was real nice and sporty, while the car was low. It wasn't tire tucked low, but it was low enough not to see the top of the tire's tread.

MK1dubber may also consider selling his carbon fibre cold air intake from his MK5 rabbit due to his lease coming close to the end of its term. But he may require you to give him your factory airbox and intake tube. I can call him if you'd like.

Ah there is always conflict!!! I admit i've read some good things about Vmaxx on a couple sites, but also i have heard that their ride quality is sometimes bad. It seems to me like its purely personal opinions from each person.

A guy is willing to trade me his one month old FK Silverline coilover for $850 + my Passport 9500ix Detector. Good deal???

I hate to be the one to do it but I'm on racelands on the mark4 and have been on them since fall last year. I have nothing else to say than the fact that they work. If you want to spend the money go for coils that have the lifetime warranty otherwise any other 2 year warrantied coil would work. Cause let's admit after the warranty's finished when the coils blow and your fucked would you rather have spent $400 or the $1000?

Have you had any problems with rusting/corrosion?

Not yet.. I just switched the wheels this weekend and taken a good look at the bodies and they're pretty gunked up with debris but no rust. I also brushed grease along the threads of the struts before winter.

The shocks on these are much firmer than stock fyi. So some bumps and potholes are spine shattering.

Alright thank you for the information!

this set contains upgraded oem struts, with good springs apparently. I cant find out if they're stainless or not, but I presume they'd fit the rabbit. What do you guys think?http://concept1.ca/SUSPENSIONS/AUTOT...SUSP%20KIT.htm

                              UPDATE:

Currently, I have a guy that has a set of FK SIlverline Coilovers, that had only been on a GTI for a month that he will sell me for $1050, which I can most likely get. I will then have to save awhile for the instal...

Or, I can get that spring/strut set from Concept 1, or the FK Highsports. It looks like I'll be doing suspension before the chip.

Which set would you guys reccomend?
