  • Pulling the E-brake

So I used to love pulling hand brakes around corners in the winter time before I got my GTI (MkIV VR6).

But when I used to pull hand brakes with my GTI I found that after parking my car my rear brakes wouldn't release as I drove away until I'd hear a great big 'Ka Chunk.'

I assumed it's something to do with having independent ABS on the rear brakes or something?

So I don't pull hand brakes anymore. :(

Just wondering if anyone experiences this as I still often here of people pulling e-brakes in their MkIV VWs.

Sounds like the pads are freezing to the rotors.

I find that a few e-brake turns help you to find your winter "driving legs"- so to speak. The first few days of winter are always hard to get used to.

the fun thing about ebraking with a FWD is it sorta makes your car feel like a RWD and drifts around a corner..

Frozen discs, hey? That could be it, although I've had the problem after having parked the car in underground heated parking. (But maybe they were still frozen - I can't remember how long it was there.)

So nobody thinks by pulling e-brakes we're somehow screwing up our ABS system or anything? I'm not much of a technical guy and don't want to mess anything up.

Could be that the ebrake cable is corroded or that the mechanism on the rear disk is siezed.
