a vr6 is almost an inline 6 as it uses one head, the exhaust is on one side of the engine while the intake is on the other.

as compared to a v6 that has exhaust on both sides and in intake on the top

I have heard the W8 is a grenade, they replace on average 1 engine every 50,000km or something silly.

An update in case anyone cares...

Thanks for your input, I was able to talk him out of it. He ended up going with an '09 Jetta 2.5. Apparently it only had 6k on the dial and with CPO he'll get 5 year warranty out of it. So far he seems pleased.

I think he made a good call. I was looking at these cars a few years ago and really loved the concept - but apparently there are no internal parts available for these engines at all! It's fine if the car is under warranty, but if not - the simplest of engine repairs can turn into a financial nightmare...

I ended up with an Audi 4.2 - it's a far better supported engine. I've seen some good deals on the W8 Passat's - but I fight the urges to investigate further and move on...
