  • E55 Retrofits

after years of wanting a set and almost paying someone else to make them(Dude from Vortex), glad i didn't since he takes up to a year for some reason. i decided to try it myself. took me 3 months on and off. parts from retrofit source about $410. Glue and and other misc. $75. i was nervous at first but in the end it was actually not that difficult. my advice for anyone who wants a set. give it a shot instead of paying someone else. i got scammed first time around so lesson learned.

    Looks good!
Did you take any pics at different steps of the build or make a DIY?

Looks good. I love the hid in projectors on the MK4 Jetta's. How did you seperate the lense?

no i was too much into getting them done i didn't want to waste time taking pics. i just followed the other 20 DIY's floating around on the Vortex. they have plenty of pics. i used the oven to separate the lens. that glue is tough.

From my own experience, I thought it was rather easy to seperate the lense from the housing. I also used the oven. I have heard that OEM HID's are waaayy harder to seperate.

I found that the silver paint on the inside of the headlight was very delicate. This is probably why most people black out the entire headlight.

            Nice work

that turned out amazing man, I am just about to order my kit from retrofitsource when I get my tax return haha.

I finally decided to do this after fearing for my life driving essentially blind at night on the highway several times this winter, The stock headlights are a complete joke on jettas, any bit of dirt on them and its game over. Even when they are clean your probably better off holding a flashlight out the window haha.

I also found it was fairly easy to separate the lenses, I was able to get mine to separate with a hair dryer, butter knife, and a little patience

Edit: also did you paint the housings with a satin finish paint?

thanks guys. i haven't seen any in Edmonton so far but then again i don't go to the meets. i see a few of the FK Projectors around, which btw i am selling mine in the classifieds too.

i used the Krylon Satin from Wal mart. getting them to fit on the drivers side was a pain.

Missed that you were from edmonton, but still there are a few sets in alberta, im rocking the fk's right now.

Thats another thing that im not sure about is fitment, because i cant pull my washer fluid because thats my water meth tank, and i done feel like moving my battery.

                        Re: E55 Retrofits

lots of room on the passenger side but i had to dremel a big hole into the battery cover to make the driver side fit. i recently got my battery checked for voltage and the guy said it was small battery. i replaced it a few years back so i cant remember if its the same size as the original battery or not. i'll take a shot later and maybe someone can let me know if it is or not.

i hope it is otherwise it would be hard to fit for others with the original battery.

                          Passenger Side

Driver Side. as you can see it eats into the Battery Cover about an 1 1/2" and just misses the Battery.

yeah its messy but i got relays for fogs as well. the battery does look small. guess i got lucky with fitment.
