  • Timing Belt Question?

    Hey guys,

So I know I could probably do some research and find the answer to my question but this is way easier! Anyways, my car has just over 96,000 kms on it and I was wondering when people usually do the timing belt and what other things should be done when you do this? Also where would you guys recommend getting this done?

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Re: Timing Belt Question?

100%Vagitarrian or something off this forum can do it for $350 bucks for you, if you buy the parts. When you do timing belt you gotta do water pump aswel. I'd say you'll be spending a little more the 1 grand to get all this done.

I don't mind paying to have a good mechanic do this for me but I will keep that in mind.
        Thanks

Anyone else got some info for me

          Re: Timing Belt Question?

ECS tuning has kits tha include everything, waterpump doesnt NEED to be done but if it goes shortly after you do the timing belt your footing the same bill to get it replaced, do it while your in there.

Call around and gett some prices, concept 1, tunedub, calgary autoworks, regal tuning, theres a ton of euro specialty shops.....

Correct me if im wrong, but if you car is a 03 GTI VR6 like your signature says, you wont be doing a timing belt, you have chains.

                Re: Timing Belt Question?

Yea its and 03 VR6, I thought it was belts? but I could be mistaken as I don't know a whole bunch about this stuff.
what difference do chains make versus belts?

Chains normally wont ever fail, but the plastic guides do fail. Your cost on the job will be a lot more than the normal timing belt job too.

as stated above, PM 100%vagitarian. I cant confirm that $350 will be his price since you do indeed have chains, but I can confirm that he knows his sh!t and will do the job right. In the end, it will definitely save you money over going to a specialty shop!

I saw that right after I posted.

But you never know, a sig could be 3 years old.

Chains is something I'd have a pro shop or pro freelancer do.

yeah but the point is he was concerned about having his belt done before it wears out. Hes got chains, so he doesnt need to worry about them wearing out. Normally you dont need to do the chain guides until you here them getting noisy right? which if i recall rightly is a lot less often then a belt needs replacing.

thanks guys. yes i do mk4 timing belts for that price. check my sig. i'm a licensed vw tech. i've yet to see failed chains on a mk4 vr6. i wouldn't worry about it. but that's not to say it never happens. it's also at least 10-14 hours to change those. i recommend all t-belts changed at 4 years or 100000kms. that means if your 2002 jetta has only 60000kms, it needs a belt. i also replace the water pump and any idler rollers, while in there. i've also seen the 2.0l crash valves when the belt brakes, so don't go thinking your 2slow is in the clear.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

The timing chains do stretch over time, but it takes awhile. it will throw out you timing a tad around the 230,000kms mark depending how its driven. As a previous VW tech, I'd rec. doing the chains and guides at 200,000kms. To be safe. VW states, depending on models, to have the timing belt replaced at 120,000kms-160,000kms or 5 years. I feel as well as other VW techs that this is too long. You don't have to replace it at 100,000kms, you just have to have it inspected after that many kms and (or) if its been longer then 4 years. If the belt has tiny cracks in it, then its time to replace it. The 2.slow L engines are not 0 tolerance engines, so if a belt does break, it is rare if the valves get bent. Most of the time you can get away with it. But who wants to gamble with that?!
