  • what to expect when buying from VW dealership

So far I've bought all my cars from the private second hand market - direct from the previous owners.

I'm tempted on the new 2door GTI, (6sp, no leather, tech package and power roof) as a fun daily driver but going to the dealership gives me a worse feeling then going into a tooth extraction or going into a cellphone store...

I've read all this stuff about negotiating the price, don't talk payments, just leave if it's not what you want etc...

But really can someone give some perspective on this? I mean is sticker a good deal? 1k off? 2k? Free 3M guard? How should I deal with the sales people?

Its tough to get a really good deal on VW's when they are brand new. And as with any new car, you will pay over the odds and take a big hit on depreciation within the first year. My recommendation would be to try to play 2/3 dealers against each other - that way you might be able to get 500-1000 off plus something extra like mats or 3M.
    Try to enjoy the experience!!

i managed to get the dealership to eat the cost of ESP and rear side airbags, and i managed to get my payments down JUST a little bit.

they don't budge much on new vw's. ford was offering me a great deal on a fusion with the media package, pretty much identical across the board, but no diesel. still went with VW. looks better. and 6 speed. auto in the fusion.

also they didn't move when i showed them the ford deal. said "okay, get a fusion."

I work at 5th Avenue Autohaus (VW dealership) and I can honestly say that you will not get much of a discount on a new GTI. Pm me though if you would like me to help you.I'd be more than happy to make sure your purchase experience is non stressfull and enjoyable. You'd have to come down to calgary for the day though!!

A new GTI is hard to get much movement on as still most dealers do not have much stock and you often have to order. Just check out the dealers find a salesman you are comfortable with and just be honest and see what happens, you are never forced to take a deal.

If you were in Calgary I would suggest talking with Nick (Sales) and Derek (Finance) at 5th Ave.

Edit: Beat me to it Derek

X2 on the multiple dealers thing. I don't know if it would work @ VW and for a new GTI but when I bought my wife's SUV I made sure I was actually ready to buy and that I knew exactly what I wanted. I then called around to every dealership within a reasonable drive and asked for the sales manager and told them exactly what I wanted and asked if they could get it. I told them upfront I was buying today from the person with the best offer and was calling all other dealers in the area. If they asked me for a price I just kept putting it back on them for their BEST deal. If they asked me about other's offers I didn't tell them and just refocused on THEIR best deal. If they didn't want to play I told them goodbye. Some turned out to be swarthy dicks and others were genuinely interested in trying to deal. I did buy her car that day and got a good deal off and some free crap.

Like I said though, may not work for a car like a GTI.

Thanks for the feedback guys, going down to Calgary is definitely not a problem, especially knowing that it will be stress free (less stress) at the dealer.

With that, its pretty much hammered in that there is high demand for the GTI so no deals on prices. This leads me to ask, is the pricing on the website configurator accurate?

I would just wait until there are cars on the lot before buying, then you will have more room to negotiate.

Thats a great thought however I just searched all of Canada and there are 6 2dr 6 speed GTI's in the system. He might have to wait a while to get full bargaining power by having multiple GTI's on the lot!

Cap VW has 7 on the way, according to them. Some of those might be sold already though. I demanded that I be able to drive one, even after I picked up my jetta.

They might have 7 GTI's on the way however there are only 6 2dr 6 speeds on order and in stock in the country. If the OP wanted a 4 dr DSG then it would be an easier car to find as we alone have 4 on the lot right now!
