  • Tire noise increase?

Hi. So in the last week what it seems my tires have become much noisier. Well I hope it is my tires and not something mechanical. The sound is speed dependant (gets louder asi go faster) and sounds alot like tire noise but like I said has gotten a lot louder in the past week and seems to be up front. My winters (pirelli soto zero) are getting prettyold and at least on the drivers front are prettyclose to the wear bars. So the question is could tires all of a sudden become much noisier as the wear?

Yep, or you have a rock in your brake disk shield or hubcab. That makes a horrid racket.

Pretty sure it's not a rock. I had that once and I does make a racket. I hope it is not a bearing. Would there be any other tell tale signs like more noise when turning etc?

I guess I could switch the back to front to see if the noise changes.

what kind of car do you drive?? a wheel bearing with most likely make less/more noise when loading or unloading of the bearing(turning). if you drive a rwd vehicle your tires may have started to cup(from being on an undriven axle for too long) and that may be the noise comming from the front or if its a fwd, the rears will do the same thing.

Hi, the car is a mkiv VR6 Gti. Does "cupped" mean that the middle is worn more than the shoulders? Because that is exactly how the tires are worn. The middle blocks are very close to the wear bars and the outer blocks on the inside and outside of the tires are less worn..

Aslo the noise doesn't change when turning.

not sure if thats "cupping" but your tires are over inflated.

no, cupping usually happens to directional tires but sometimes does to everytire, its when one tread block is higher than the next tread block. similar to the following. thats why you see lots of performance tires have a solid outside shoulder.

and yes, youre tires are over inflated, try dropping them a couple psi.

it may be loud just beacuse of how worn out they are

you should be able to run your hand around the tire and feel the difference when from one direction to the other.

Update.. Pretty sure it is bearing. I jacked up the front and spun the wheels. The side the noise seems to be coming from was grind-y sounding while the other side was nice, smooth and quiet. :(
