I think all seasons are ok in Calgary. especially for the little bit it snows. I think the main thing is protecting the wheels. And 500 bucks seems an alright price, most steelie/winter combos are around 600 and up. You could maybe talk him down a little bit. The all seasons would take a lot longer to wear out too. It's a tough call though, I hear winters are nice (I learned to appreciate them from driving in the TDi with SL).

The crazy thing is those hubcaps are prolly close to 100 bucks each!!

My 2 cents, good luck with the decision.

I think that winters are always the best bet. The roads aren't typically dry everywhere - namely residential roads. I found that all seasons just didnt cut it on the packed, icy snow that was stubbornly on our street for the majority of the winter.

      My two cents

Obviously you are going to have to decide yourself Bill... there are different opinions.

Most of the people advocating all-seasons are taking the "you can probably get away with it" argument, and most of the proponents of winters are using the "better safe than sorry" argument.

Good assessment Kor. I've been looking at the specials on TireTrends.ca and I'm thinking about this package: 16" VW take-off steelies and Kumho KW17 I'Zen show tires. I can't find ANY information on these tires on the net... it's almost as if TireTrends sells models of tires that nobody else does. I also couldn't find any info about the Hankook tires they have on a different package.

Anyways... I'm going to make my decision tomorrow, so on to my next question: should I have a dealership or shop change the tires for me, or just use my VW jack in the trunk and do it myself? What do you guys think?

Sorry if I seem like a super newb with this winter tire business, but I've never had them before so I don't know. Just trying to make the right decision the first time, rather than buying crap I don't like and having to spend more money.

          Thanks!

I just had the dealership quickly swap my wheels tonight. (it had already begun to snow like a mothertrucker and I panicked). If I remember correctly, the dude charged me for like .3 hours of labour (I got an oilchange while they were at it - and watched the season finale of Joe Shmoe Show while I waited). I think it's a lot less hassle to get it done for you.

You bastard Chris, you should have come over and helped me put my winter wheels on. I looked like a sucker out in my parking lot sweating up a storm carrying my 60 lb wheels up 4 flights of stairs.

Hah... swapped mine out this weekend while it was still +15. Looks like the best bet now is to either find a buddy with a garage and do it yourself or spend some moola and get the dealership to do it. Its up to you...

See you boys out on your winters this season!

                  Cheers... :mrpimp:
