  • Need your opinion!

I was just talking with someone at a dealership that is selling their personal wheels. They are 16" steelies off of a Beetle, with stock rubber (Continental touring somthing - all season rubber). They are basically brand new (about 20km's on them). He also has VW plastic hub caps for them. He wants $500 for all of it.

Firstly, do you think I'll be able to get by in winter with these? Calgary has the whimpiest of winters anyways, it's dry most of the time. Secondly, do you think that is a good price?

I'd like your opinion as I've got to make a decision quick as winter is a couple of days away (according to the forecast).

You should be fine with that rubber, snow tires would give you an advantage on certain days in certain conditions, but think of how many days in a winter season you actually drive on snow. I had the Conti tours in 15" on my 4 door turbo and I had no problems with them through nearly 2 winters.

I think the price is good, as I think steelies are around $75 each new plus tires so that seems like a good price. The key is just to get off the pilot sports and keep the wheels safe

I have yet to actually USE snow tires through a winter so I cannot say for sure. I do know that last winter I ran my all-seasons and was kinda frightened at times on ice and snow. I guess its a gamble - how snowy will the winter be, how much driving will you do on the snow, how carefull are you going to be.

It does seem like an okay deal though.

I suppose as the very least it'll be no worse than what I've been driving on every winter. I've never had snow tires and I've yet to kill myself.

If I really didn't like them I could probably sell them later on for not much of a loss either.

Hmmm.... anyone else wanna chime in before I decide?

                Hey Middleton,

Bought me a set of slightly used Michelin Arctic Alpin's on 16" Beetle steelies with the hubcaps for around $300 for my 20th. So, suffice to say, I would attempt to talk him down at least a little bit on the $500. As for winter tires or not?! That's up to you. Personally, I usually drive out to Kimberley, BC and Panorama, etc. at least a couple times a winter, so the money spent on winter rubber is well worth it for myself. However, if you don't plan on leaving Calgary for any of those "less travelled roads" I wouldn't bother getting winters either. Just remember, no racing any WRX's though!!

                Cheers... :mrpimp:

I used to just use all-seasons all the time...but then I figured I'd *try* winter tires and HOLY CRAP they're quite a nice change! Out here in OTtawa they salt the roads pretty heavily so there isn't really much snow build-up, but there's definitely a nice improvement on the ice! Seriously...if I had the choice, I'd go for some winters.

Winters are the best, I did part of last year with the stock all seasons. Remember even a minor curbing will be more than the price of the winters. I've been glad for every inch before driving around. I'd go for it for sure.

Paul: definately! Such an awesome concert! It's tied with Radiohead for the best concert I've ever been to. We had awesome seats too!

Chris: yeah, I would totally buy your rubber man, but I have no wheels to put them on.

I totally don't know what to do about these stupid winters!!! Aaahhhh!!! All I know is that I'm not going to be able to drive my car after today or tomorrow (cause it's probably gonna snow) and that sucks. I told the guy I'd take those steelies and rubber, but now I don't know if that was a smart move or not... you all have me confused!! Do I call him back and say "no thanks". I don't know. I have to decide today though.

                              Any input is appreciated.
