  • MK3 sticky shifting

    Hi,
my mk3 jetta has never shifted all that nicely. It isn't the clutch. It has been that way with 2 clutches. I think its the linkage from the stick. Anyone know if this is at all common?

    cheers

    Re: MK3 sticky shifting

Is the shifting a linkage type or a cable shift?
Can't remember what setup came on 98's as I know on diesels that was a big switch year tranny wise.

I went to autopartsway.ca and went under the tranny section and saw a few cheap repair kits. One was for the shifter, the other was bushings for the linkage I think.

I know on my 91 and 93 diesel I went to pick and pull and found newer linkages and that cleaned things up a bunch. On the cable shifters you have to adjust them, I don't have my bently right now but I think they tell you in there.

Lube all the shifter connections including under the shift boot.
Don't use Graphite or WD40..I use wurth product HHS 2000.
Or get chain saw oil and put it in a squirt can. (*the stuff for the chain not the gas)

linkage, not cable. I'll try to clean it up/lube it. Otherwise, I will check out that rebuild kit. I'll see if I can find a similar lube.

Looking at that HHS2000 stuff, when is silicone free a good thing?

Its a common problem, especially when its cold outside. VWSM hit it right on the head. This fixed my sisters Jetta.

HHS 2000 is not an easy find. Might go with the chain oil unless Paul can tell me where I can find some.
