Re: Mk4 suspension question
Same predicamant as you are a few years ago with my jetta tdi. Didn't want to lower it, but wanted a stiffer sportier ride.
Went with a full set of shine springs and bilstien tc sports at all four corners. Also got an autotech 28mm rear sway bar used from here as well. Also did all the small things while I was at it, ball joints tie rods, and all the rubber mounts.
With the upgraded suspension the only thing that sat lower was the upgraded rear sway bar. Besides that the car sits really close to stock just a tad more level then before.
I got everything out of the states many years ago and think it was close to $1000 for the whole suspension with mounts.
I spent 2 winters without a skid plate and never had a problem. I put the skid plate in a month or two ago after having to do 2 oil pans for my brothers and not wanting to do one on my car.
I would look at the coilovers if I had to do this again, but I don't think I would go fk. I find if you want a good set you can easily pay $2000 for a kit with springs. That's a little to rich for my blood and figured the $$$ was better spent on a good set of shocks/struts/springs/mounts/and front end suspension and steering parts. Only wanted to have to worry about an alignment once and figured it would be cheaper to do everything then go back and do a tie rod later.
Now in saying that I should also admit that I noticed on my last tire swap that my inner tie rod on one side has play. I have only once seen an inner go on a vw, this is now my second.
Most of the cheap stuff is aimed towards the crowd that lowers their car. You have to look at this and basically see this as a one time thing for the car that you will never do again. If you don't see yourself driving the car in a year then don't spend much $$$. If you plan on driving it till the wheels fall off then spend the money and be done with it.
