    Re: Mk4 suspension question

Same predicamant as you are a few years ago with my jetta tdi. Didn't want to lower it, but wanted a stiffer sportier ride.
Went with a full set of shine springs and bilstien tc sports at all four corners. Also got an autotech 28mm rear sway bar used from here as well. Also did all the small things while I was at it, ball joints tie rods, and all the rubber mounts.
With the upgraded suspension the only thing that sat lower was the upgraded rear sway bar. Besides that the car sits really close to stock just a tad more level then before.
I got everything out of the states many years ago and think it was close to $1000 for the whole suspension with mounts.
I spent 2 winters without a skid plate and never had a problem. I put the skid plate in a month or two ago after having to do 2 oil pans for my brothers and not wanting to do one on my car.
I would look at the coilovers if I had to do this again, but I don't think I would go fk. I find if you want a good set you can easily pay $2000 for a kit with springs. That's a little to rich for my blood and figured the $$$ was better spent on a good set of shocks/struts/springs/mounts/and front end suspension and steering parts. Only wanted to have to worry about an alignment once and figured it would be cheaper to do everything then go back and do a tie rod later.
Now in saying that I should also admit that I noticed on my last tire swap that my inner tie rod on one side has play. I have only once seen an inner go on a vw, this is now my second.
Most of the cheap stuff is aimed towards the crowd that lowers their car. You have to look at this and basically see this as a one time thing for the car that you will never do again. If you don't see yourself driving the car in a year then don't spend much $$$. If you plan on driving it till the wheels fall off then spend the money and be done with it.

Hmmm, how much difference does a rear sway make? My GTI loves to roll in turns.

Well, you must replace the shocks as well. The stock shocks are horridly soft.

RSB will make a huge difference for cornering. It will eliminate a large amount of that sideways tilt/rock that you feel every time you take a corner with a little speed. If you go with stiffer shocks, you will increase this to a degree, and will also lose that motorboat rise when you step on it and lose the nose dive when you get on the brakes. I agree on doing the RSB first and see if that is enough.

You will feel a lot less body roll with the RSB and a little less in the front with the strut brace.

                  Re: Mk4 suspension question

I replaced my stock TDI ones with Bilsteins shocks/struts with Neuspeed springs. Dropped it 1/2" if that, but firmed up the suspension. Not sure how this would compare to a new stock set as mine were older and softer. I like the feel.

I bought the ones rated for the TDI, not the 2.0 L.
I tried using 2L shocks and springs. The front dropped about 1-1.5" and the ride was harsh.

                  Hope that helps.
