  • Octane Boosters

Does anyone have the lowdown on octane boosters? Are they good, are they bad, are they completely useless?

I'm just curious. Plus, having to drive down to Mohawk is sometimes... a pain in the ass.

I've used them a few times, I didn't notice a difference at all. There are definitely a big waste of the green. Just put good quality fuel into your ride.

        It depends on the product.

Ummm I dont know specifically which products, you will need to read up on it.

You can "really" boost your octane with Toluene for instance. They use that stuff for high performance (not street) cars and engines all the time.

Note that the only case where an increase in octane will result in more power is when the engine needs it. If you are already verging on detonation the engine needs added octane. If the engine is computer controlled and there is room to increase the engine timings added octane is good. Octane is a measure of how SLOWLY gasoline burns. The higher the octane, the slower the flame burns. This allows higher compression.

Lots of products that claim to be octane boosters just add a tiny tiny bit of octane and then they put in a bunch of cleaners like injector cleaner etc. So every so often it helps someones performance (by cleaning their injectors) then they tell their friends, etc. Kind of a scam. This is why often when you read up about the product they flash a lot of testimonials at you.

Most octane boosters have Toluene in them. The problem is volume. If you have 10 liters of 90 octane, and add 1 liter of 100 octane, you only increase the total octane by 1 (91). So to really get a benefit you need to use a crap load of booster. Even 5 liters of 91 and 5 of 101 only gets you to 95. Buy race gas.

The only real reason to use the stuff is if your wife/bf/dog fills a car with 87 that does not have knock sensors. Our cars will retard timing automatically and drive fine with regular 87 but older cars can be seriously damaged.

I see. I don't want to spend a **** load filling my tank up with boosters when I can save time and money buying it directly at the pump. Now, I think Mohawk (or one of their competitors) needs to starting selling 94 in the NW!!

Things off the shelf¡K no comments but none of them make my car feel a difference.

What you can do is to get the VP race fuel avg.$600.00 CAD a drum. 98,100,104,110 octane and addictive package of your choice. They even have race diesel fuel for tractor pulling or big rig road race. I will find it interesting if my TDI can take some of that. LOL.

Why buy octane booster when you can just purchase 94 octane here in Calgary?! :mrscrewy: :mrtongue:
