  • vw will do anything to loose customer loyalty

So i have this nice old lady customer , owns a 06 tdi jetta , and she has been using castrol 505.01 oil evry 7-8k she is now at 118,00 kms and her (and many like her ) #4 exhaust cam lobe is wore off , now vw wont do a thing for her we have sent documentation and picture had the dealership diag it and still nothing , they feel that that is acceptible to have the engine wear out at such high milage , so now this lifetime vw owner is going to buy a new car from another brand , vw you are soo killing me , how can i plan on having customers in the future if you wont help keep customer loyalty

      Is the 505.01 a 5w40 or 5w30?
Many guys over on TDi club have gone back to a 5w40 mobile 1 TDT or ESP for the PD engines. Not approved for the 505.01, but many people feel the viscosity and additive package is better then the 5w30 spec

Trust me, I have a 2004 Passat with a balance shaft, you think a cam is expensive the parts are easily double for the balance shaft.
And the labour is also a lot more, so this job done by a dealer or independent will cost close to 4g's

i've done many balance shaft/oil pump modules on the passats. pays 21 hours.

i would also replace the cylinder head on the pd engine. if the cam is worn, so are the injector bores, from my experience. reman head is 4-5 g's. that gets you new head, cam and injectors, bolt on ready to go.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

That's why i don't carry that crap unless the customer insists.

What oil should we be using then? I thought that the 505.01 spec was a must on PD engines?

I don't know if that's the standard dealer time but that's pretty crazy.
I went and checked out the big thread on tdiclub. And oilhammer figures it takes him 5-6 hours to do one not including cure time. He admits to charging 8 hours for the job, but 21 is way different then 8.
At the hourly rate and extra cost of the parts I could drive to his shop out east and have all the diesel and hotels paid for and still have a few dollars in my pocket.

Re: vw will do anything to loose customer loyalty

that really sucks, I don't understand why they claim that 118,000km is "high mileage". What the hell is that about.

I've noticed this a lot with VW, they really don't come across as expecting their cars to live much farther than the warranty covers. It is especially apparent with their parts dept at the dealer. They don't carry hardly anything for Mk4s or older. Everything has to be special ordered. Where as with my volvo (not a new volvo, a 1980 240 to be exact) I only once had to special order parts and that was because it was a hard to find gasket. It is really frustrating when vw doesn't even stock wear and tear items at the dealer, like they expect people to just buy new vehicles, not maintain them. Thanks again VW!

He's refering to castrol being crap not the 505.01

I run motul 505.01 in my pd and it's glorious! Just remember to use additive (which Chris sells) that will add to the life of the engine.

Re: vw will do anything to loose customer loyalty

yes it is the castrol that is the problem here , 505.01 is the standards they are supposed to meet . they might meet it but the other companies far exceed the wear standards and will significantly increse the life of yur pd, as for replaacing the head thats a bit much , the injectors rocking in the head was a flaw in early 04 pd but not the brms, so the best thing is cam folowers and a few odds and ends the job will be arround 3-4k incl labour , as aoopsed to a 5k head and labour , i am just waiting for the recall 3 years down the road like audis guage cluster on my tt or the cats on a 2.0slow or the coil packs we all are gettting now, they just need to get sued and hey will recognize , so for pd owners out there , pull of the valve cover if you are under warrenty, if you see sighns of wear get it fixed before you go off warrenty, and for the rest of you pd owners pull of your valve cover because if you show slight sighns of wear on just the cam you can just replace the cam and change you oil to a better brand , TOTAL , MOTUL , MOBIL 1, AMSOIL, ROYAL PURPLE , and a anti wear additive had helped all of my customers , if i get the car at arround 50k or sooner i have stopped this wear issue all together , and this in my opinion is the only major flaw in the pd engine , besides the balance shafts (2.0 tdi) that is also caused by the oil thing

Wait, Chris are you saying there IS a recall for the cats on a 2.0 or you are WAITING for them to recall the cats because they crap out on everyone?

well warranty paid 21 hours for the oil pump module. it also changes up from a chain drive oil pump to a gear driven pump. which is also where some of the noise comes from. i've done one in 9 hours.

soot on the intank diesel pump is a good indicator that the cylinder head is worn. i can't remember which years the cars were that i've replaced the head.

some 2.0 cats can be replaced under warranty, even if you've expired. it's an emission related part, so canada has something to say about it.
