  • Coilover confusion....

I have been looking into doing a coil-over install on my mkv jetta.....I would like to buy local and would like them installed as well....

My issue is, what is the Cup Kit from H&R compared to the coil over kit?? I would like to have adjustable rate if possibly, but not necessary, more so I am after a nice ride that will be very low, as I would like to run some nice wheels in the summer to come.

I am tired of just springs, as in the past the ride quality is s**t.

Any suggestions?? Any idea what the price to install is, as i would like to be under $1200 if possible.

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Coilover confusion....

A Cupkit is just a set of springs with matched shocks/struts to give the best ride with the drop the springs provide.

A coilover is a threaded setup with adjustable spring perches to give a range of lowering heights, such as pictured below.

A spring/shock set gives a closer to stock ride with a generally smaller lowering amount (1-1.5" on average) where the coilover can allow for a much great drop (on MK5s you can get H&R Ultra lows which go to 3") but usually the ride is firmer.

You need to decide what is most important to you, height, ride and price and then go through the options. If you want low and a good ride you may have to spend a bit more money as some coilovers are cheap but are not the best ride.

    Hope that helps a bit.

Concept1 looks to currently have a sale on their H&R suspensions, which might be a good deal for you.

Would those be the "ultra low" ones?

          Re: Coilover confusion....

Looks like Ultra Lows are for GTIs only, but you are getting down pretty low as they go down to close to 3" with those ones, the GTI ones will go to 4" which would be very low.

They look to have a Premium and Street version so not sure which one of the two they have but still a good deal either way.

If you are happy with the height of a cup kit from a known brand like H&R then you will NOT get better ride quality than that!

Only reason for coils is if you want to go lower, and the ride quality will get more harsh the lower you go!

Any pics of hr cup kit on a mkv?

Im not sure whether I want to go with some 18" VMR's or like a BBS 16" look, but I do not think the Cup Kit will go low enough for the bbs to look good.

Jetta on cup kit, not the best pic but just did a quick search.

Hmm....not as low as I want, guess I may have to cough up the extra $$ for the coil overs.

Just don't buy FK. I have silverlines in the bunny, and the ride is just not good, Yes they go really really low (lower then HR ultras actually) but they ride terrible, HR is definitely a good product. Talk to Popp at Matrix good deals on HR for you.

I will be looking into the h&r spring/koni combo and the h&r coils....is there a big difference?? Price or Ride wise??

Yes there is a big price increase going to coils usually, and yes the ride will immediately feel firmer. More than the difference going from a factory suspension to a factory sport suspension.

Seriously though never put cheap coils on your car, its like breaking it. Get the best ones possible.

honestly, go online.. and find a set of ksport coils for your car. i guarantee they make them, and not only are they 36 way dampening adjustable, but they also have many of the features from more expensive coils. i think you can find them for like a g note from most shops online.

point is, buy ksports.. they go insanely low, are dampening adjustable and are 1000$, sometimes a little under.
