  • Can't remove oil filter cap!

    2000 Golf 1.9 TDI

Last oil change about 10K ago.

Today, when I go to change the oil, for love or money, I could not get the oil filter cap off. I tried it when it was hot, I tried when cold, I used a 2 sizes of strap wrenches, I tapped, I sprayed penetrating lube, I cursed, etc...

Any other tips on how I might get this bloody thing off?

    Thanks,
    rico

Sounds like someone torqued it on good. I usually only do mine hand tight. If I find I can't get it off I just use a rubber strap wrench.
Edit: I wish I had the one Stefan has though

I got one from Napa for something like $12. I originally bought it for my wife's Mazda but it turns out it's the same size for VW.

                        It worked! IT WORKED!

A big thank-you to Stefan, for the loan of his metalnerd oil filter cap wrench...

It was tight, but I got it. I think I'll put a dab of anti seize on it next time instead of threadlocker.

Just put oil around the threads and the lip of the filter before hand tightening it on. It's made removing it down the road go without a hitch for me..
