    I think you have that backwards. The engine should get colder in city driving than highway. But the heater still puts out lots of heat. The temperature gauge does not need to be at 90....

    I own and drive 3 different diesel cars. They need to be worked to get the engine hot, yes. You need to drive harder to get it warmed up as quick as a gasser. IMO, the modern VW heaters work well and the engine does not need to be very hot before it puts out a lot of heat.

      No I have it right.

      Stop and go driving by it's nature uses more fuel and thus builds more heat. Although in a TDI you can also watch the heat gauge drop at stoplights as the car idles on really cold days.

      On the highway the increased fuel efficiency and increased cold air flow means less cabin heat.

      I had an 03 and my brother had an 04 and they were identical in this regard -- also had a number of friends with TDI's of various years.

      I think you may be experiencing a wee bit of cognitive dissonance about your cars -- or maybe it's been a while since you've driven a gas car with a good heater -- maybe you're just used to the cold
